If “Become Elite” were a person, it’d be Erik Westrum. That’s the name of his bestselling book, but it’s also how he approaches everything in life - and he teaches readers how to do the same. Erik is a professional hockey player turned successful businessman, turned published author, turned top-performing sales guy. And I tend to listen when someone with a stacked resume like him gives advice. Here are some rules Erik lives by: 1. If you want to excel at a top level, there’s no room for excuses. 2. Your motivation and purpose need to be bigger than any challenge you might face. 3. You can accomplish your biggest dreams if you have a good plan. 4. If you learn how to be a servant leader, you’ll have a bigger impact - and more people will follow. 5. Even elite, high performers need someone in their corner. That last one is a great reminder! Most people won’t build an intentional - an ELITE - life. They won’t start the business. They won’t write the book. They won’t bet on themselves. You get to decide: Are you most people? Or are you elite? As leaders, we need to be aware of what our team members are feeling and experiencing - particularly if they feel safe with us psychologically. Safety in this sense is the ability to speak or act with sincerity without fear of reprisal, and we have to offer this in order to establish the level of trust needed in high-performing groups. You can create psychological safety by asking yourself the following questions: - Does the other party feel safe? - Am I holding space? - Am I being too prescriptive or offering unsolicited advice? Join me as I talk about the importance of psychological safety on today's #RooftopPodcast. 🎙️ Check out the podcast: https://lnkd.in/edY4Nvdk 👍 Like if you enjoy the podcast 📲 Share to your community and use #RooftopInspired #RooftopLeadership #Leadership #PsychologicalSafety #Trust #FearBased #Behavior #TheChurn #Motivation #Service #CommunityLeadership #LocalLeadership #CrisisLeadership #SmallBusiness #Entrepreneur #Entrepreneurship #MilitaryService #SpecialForces #Podcast

Tips from a successful businessman on how to get mentors and advice from people more senior that you. Scott Galloway gave four tips in a recent podcast episode by The Diary Of A CEO. It is hosted by Steven Bartlett. - Have the courage to ask. People who have achieved success are generally kind to people who are striving. - Keep the ask concise. Long rambling emails do not get read. Senior people have limited time. - Do not ask for a “mentoring” relationship immediately. Establish a relationship first and build from there. - Find common ground. Examples are prior working experience in the same company, same school, or common friends. Photo credit: Taken by me. This is a pair of hot custard buns. These are popular lunch items for lunch in Chinese resturants. These are served in a pair. Senior and successful people can appear to be out of reach and intimidating. If you have relevant questions to ask, reach out. They are not as different from people who are starting out. Find common ground. These two buns are alike. Connect with interests, past experience and common acquaintances. Link to the podcast episode in comments section.
