The byline on yesterday's WSJ article on PBMs was on point: "Pharmacy-benefit managers are outsmarting regulators by adapting their opaque business models and keeping data from the public". In a functional industry, "innovation" means inventing new, useful things. In healthcare and PBMs, "innovation" means inventing new, sneaky ways to extract rents from the system. In this sense, legacy PBMs have been extremely "innovative" over the past couple of decades. https://lnkd.in/g_iHcPpZ

*** U.S. District Court Vacates Copay Accumulator Rule*** This is a long-awaited victory for patients. Copay accumulators have been a barrier to access and affordability of specialty medications for so many. It is also tremendously professionally gratifying. I and a few colleagues lived this issue daily for 2+ years. Spent countless hours advising our #pharma clients, designing solutions, analyzing data to make compelling arguments to support this and other court cases, speaking at conferences and on panels, and providing constructive yet critical comments on associated government rules. Last year I moved on to a new role in a new segment of our industry. While I was excited for the opportunity, I did feel like there was a bit of unfinished business on this topic. I'm happy to see this outcome, and to have made a contribution to it coming to fruition. I'm also not naïve enough to think this is the true end on this issue (and also knowing other tactics have already materialized to similarly diminish the effect of manufacturer-sponsored patient support programs...)
