With the Kentucky Derby happening this weekend, I thought it would be timely to review the 2009 race. As a 50-1 underdog, Mine That Bird won the race over the heavy favorites Dunkirk and Santa Anita at 4-1 odds each. No one gave Mine That Bird a chance and yet the horse won against all odds. So, you may be wondering, what does a horse race have in common with investing? You have the same odds at picking a 50-1 underdog correctly as picking a dominant stock! Since 1926, 2% of public companies have created 78% of the stock’s market value as of December 2022. This is why we invest in the entire stock market because being right is hard.

Partnerships end and new begin in Formula 1. The smaller the changes are during the season and from year-to-year the easier it is to handle the partnership network. Big teams tend to have quite small changes from year-to-year. Here is a comparison between the changes in the Haas, Williams and Sauber networks, so far. It is important to point out that the networks are different in size. Sauber have 41 partners and Haas 15.

Big aha moment for me yesterday at Rally in Indy! Sat down down to listen to the pitch finalists for the $1m award yesterday. Thought I could take away ideas from the way they pitched, things they said, deck format, etc.. WRONG MOVE. What I REALLY took away was the questions from the judges. All the pitch & deck prep in the work don't matter if you can't be confident and clear in answering their questions. Here were a few questions I jotted down - and will be practicing in the future! - Talk about your biz model - How do you think about your moat (to competition)? - Who acquires you and why? - Where did first clients come from and how do you replicate it? (Where did you find them?) - Integration? - Break down revenue by sector & use case - If company fails in the next 5 yrs, why?
