Blake Griffin retired on Tuesday. He's an employee-employer cautionary tale. The structure changed at his workplace (the Clippers): new owner, new management, new environment. His key colleagues changed there, too, including his prime collaborator (Chris Paul departed). Still, as a top performer at the time, new management gave Griffin a new contract. They lauded him, embraced his possible longevity with the company by concocting a faux jersey retirement ceremony, and paid him well. They discarded him a year later. The Clippers traded Griffin to Detroit, a modern-day NBA outpost, for the equivalent of financial wiggle room. The Clippers, in effect, laid him off from their organization after huffing and puffing about how important he was to it. Griffin's place in NBA history won't only be about his astonishing power dunking ability. Many will look at him, and how he was treated, as the fulcrum for star movement in the league. Players, like many in the current workforce, began to learn from clear history lessons prior generations ignored. They now understand employers will shed talent when results and budget dictate they do so. No exceptions. Griffin's treatment changed the minds of others in his industry. They just needed a glaring, relatable example to consider. They realized controlling their course was better than leaving it to chance or temperamental upper management, a lesson spreading well beyond NBA team employees. 📸: Streeter Lecka/Getty Images
