🌟 Honored to Host Javier Quiñones, CEO & Chief Sustainability Officer of IKEA USA 🌟
In preparation for the upcoming Conscious Capitalism CEO Summit 2024, I find myself reminiscing about a remarkable moment from last year's summit. Hosting the keynote interview with Javier Quiñones, the CEO & Chief Sustainability Officer of IKEA USA, was truly an honour. Javier's humility, aligned values, and mission-driven approach deeply resonated with everyone present, leaving a lasting impression. If you are keen to join us at the 2024 summit, please get in touch!
Conscious Capitalism, Inc, the nonprofit organisation behind the summit, was established by John Mackey, the visionary co-founder and co-CEO of Whole Foods Market Foods, in collaboration with marketing professor Raj Sisodia. Their shared commitment to a more conscious and purpose-driven approach to business mirrors Javier's leadership philosophy.
At IKEA USA, Javier Quiñones has been pivotal in driving sustainability initiatives and nurturing a culture of responsibility and innovation. Under his guidance, IKEA has set exemplary standards for corporate sustainability practices, illustrating that profitability and purpose coexist harmoniously.
During our conversation, Javier offered valuable insights into IKEA's sustainability journey, stressing the importance of integrating environmental and social considerations into all business aspects. His unwavering dedication to creating a positive impact within IKEA and beyond exemplifies conscious leadership.
Our discussion delved into Javier's leadership journey and emphasised the significance of passion and vision in steering a company towards a greater purpose. We also highlighted the pivotal role of conscious culture and leadership in shaping businesses for equitable good.
We explored the collaborative partnership between IKEA and Salary Finance as a prime example of businesses uniting for impactful change. Furthermore, we discussed IKEA's core values, such as embracing meaningful differentiation and constantly pursuing improvement.
The conversation also touched upon the intrinsic link between IKEA's sustainability goals and its overarching mission and vision, strongly focusing on achieving a circular economy and carbon neutrality by 2050. Examples of sustainable practices within IKEA, including using recycled materials and energy-efficient measures, were shared to underscore the company's commitment to sustainability.

Kudos to IKEA for making its tip-over safety innovations available for others, in order to boost furniture stability and safety across the industry.
I still remember reading about Volvo's pioneering three-point seat belt in 1959, a game-changer for car safety. Nils Bohlin, Volvo's lead safety engineer, had this solution patented. But instead of claiming its exclusive rights to this groundbreaking solution, Volvo chose to share it with the industry to prioritize safety for all.
Therefore very delighted to see that decades later, another Swedish brand is taking a similar path.
To be safe at home and on the road is fundamental to children's and families' wellbeing. Let's hope more companies follow suit, leveraging (or ironically - refraining from claiming) their intellectual property rights to drive innovation and child well-being at scale.

Creating a better everyday life for the many is also about enabling a safer everyday life. Today I am proud to share the announcement of a patent pledge that will make our Anchor and Unlock innovation available for others to use.
At IKEA we are dedicated to our mission of influencing change in the furniture industry, to reduce tip over incidents and support everyone to live a safer life at home. In this work, we strongly believe in collaboration and that together we can make a difference.

In 2023, we find ourselves at the midway point in the global efforts to fulfill the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs) - a collective mission that holds the key to a healthier and more just world. At Cosun, we wholeheartedly embrace this mission but are fully aware we can’t carry the burden all alone.
Today, we're happy to shed a light on 𝗦𝗗𝗚 𝟭𝟳 - 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀. It emphasizes the importance of global cooperation and collaboration among governments, businesses, and organizations to achieve all the other Sustainable Development Goals and promote sustainable development worldwide.
Over time, we've gained invaluable insights into the profound impact of collaborative innovation. Whether it's joining forces with customers, suppliers, knowledge institutes, or even competitors, we've witnessed the transformative power of partnerships.
As the old saying wisely states, "If you want to go far, go together!" This principle lies at the very heart of our approach. For instance, let's take our partnership with IKEA. In spring 2023, we reaffirmed our collaboration, wherein both IKEA and Cosun harnessed their strengths and capabilities to foster innovation collectively. This year, we embarked on a joint mission with the goal of significantly increasing the availability of plant-based food options, aiming for 50% of main meals offered in IKEA restaurants to be plant-based. Additionally, there is also an interesting opportunity to explore furniture materials from agri and food production side streams.

Now in its 80th year, IKEA retailer Ingka Group continues to deliver on sustainability, and profitability – as the Group’s just-released Annual Summary and Sustainability Report reveals.
In FY23, while the company saw revenues rise 31%, it simultaneously reduced its climate footprint by 24.3%.
“This year we celebrated 80 years of IKEA. So much has changed in eight decades, yet we are still guided by the same vision: to create a better everyday life for the many people,” says Jesper Brodin, CEO, Ingka Group.
Recognising that there is always more than can be achieved, Ingka Group revised its climate targets in November 2023 – aiming to reduce emissions from its value chain by at least 50% by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050 without using carbon credits.

❓How to Manage Sustainable Supply Chains?
🔴A Current Case Study: IKEA
Managing your supply chain is no easy task.
It requires constant effort and controls.
Wondering where to look for inspiration?
🌲IKEA is known for its long-term efforts to maintain a sustainable supply chain.
❌However, even company such IKEA is not immune to scandals.
Recent reports have emerged regarding IKEA's practices involving sourcing wood from protected forests in Romania, which has brought criticism from environmental groups like Greenpeace.
More on it here: https://lnkd.in/gB-yP6AR
Bit demotivating, yet challenging for other companies.
Understanding that sustainability is an ongoing effort. Sometimes you fail.
Crucial not only to environmental responsibility.
But also to a reputation. Which is priceless.

❓ Do you ever feel hesitant to begin a new challenge? In our fast-paced world, the fear of not achieving instant success often holds us back from taking the first step. However, meaningful change, just like building a brand, requires dedication and consistency over time.
Take inspiration from Ikea's journey towards sustainability. Ikea committed to becoming carbon positive by 2030. While they're not there yet, they've already achieved a 30.2% reduction in their carbon footprint and are on track for a 50% reduction very soon! In our opinion, that still equates to a whole lot of good.
What can we learn from this? Ikea didn't let the fear of not having immediate results deter them. They embraced incremental change, and these small steps have already created a significant impact on our world.
⚡ ⚡ At our core, LOTKA&Co. believes every brand has a mark to make, and it starts with taking that first step, even when the path ahead seems long. Just like Ikea, have a clear plan, take action, and stay committed to your goals.
Change isn't a sprint; it's a marathon. Whether it's building a sustainable brand or making a positive impact, small, consistent efforts lead to remarkable results.
We're here to help you navigate the journey, embracing incremental change as the path to lasting transformation. Together, let's raise the bar and leave a meaningful mark on the world around us.

Minus and minus do not always equal a ➕. With negative practices, we can't make a positive planet.
How can we then?
According to IKEA, incorporating ESG aspects into business strategy is a must. To address diverse sustainability and ethical challenges, IKEA has developed the "People and Planet Positive" ➕ sustainability strategy.
IKEA is on a mission to create a sustainable business model to be fit for the customers and co-workers of today and tomorrow with several key strategies and mindset:
✅Committed to Sustainable Growth
✅Global Ambitions, Local Actions
✅Decarbonizing Transport and Digital Transformation
✅Co-workers are the Main Driver of the Company's Growth
"We envision a future where making sustainable choices is not just an option but a norm that is accessible, affordable, and appealing to all," explains Cas Lachaert, Market Manager, IKEA Slovenia.

What an amazing week at the IKEA Board Meeting in Poland – where we took a deep dive into IKEA’s Supply Chain, an area of mastery and excellence, which is of course essential for IKEA’s quality and low prices.
The Head of IKEA’s Supply Chain is the wonderful Susanne Waidzunas, an IKEA veteran who leads operations in a clever, trustworthy and low-profile way – very much in IKEA’s style! 😊
We visited the biggest furniture factory in the world, located in Poznan, which has over 100 hectares of working operations! This factory is led by another AMAZING woman Małgorzata Dobies-Turulska. 💪
There are so many stories I could share about this visit, but for now I want to highlight how impressed I was with the commitment towards co-creating a fully decarbonised goods flow!
IKEA completes 1.7 million shipments a year, and the team are constantly striving to ensure that logistics are simpler, more affordable and sustainable. Bien sûr!
IKEA’s ambition is to use zero-emission transport and 100% renewable energy across operations, with:
✅ 100% renewable electricity in logistics units by 2025
✅ 70% relative reduction in transport operations and the use of 100% renewable energy by 2030
I was also very excited to see the fleet of 100% electric trucks! Did you know that IKEA was the pioneer of using the mega trucks from Volvo Group? 🤔
An epic move from IKEA – much like Claude Van Dime’s famous Volvo split! Watch it below 👏

Today IKEA, together with over 400 cross-sector organisations, calls on EU leaders to confirm the Green Deal as a strategic priority in the next EU mandate.
For us in IKEA supply chain operations it is vital to keep ambition and momentum in the industry transformation towards decarbonised transport and logistics.
Of course there are, and will be, challenges along the journey. But more importantly there are lots of opportunities in creating a future that is better for people and planet. It is urgent and it is doable!

Yesterday morning our Deputy CEO&CFO Global , Juvencio Maeztu, and the CEO&CSO of IKEA in Spain, Nurettin Acar, presented the sustainability report and economic results. It was amazing to see when the vision and purpose are integrated naturally in every step of our company.
And here, some reflections:
We firmly believe that leading the business from purpose translates into good results. Even more, it is the only path to a sustainable and better future for all.
In this last year, we have not only grown 68% as a business, but, at the same time, we have reduced our operational carbon footprint, we have improved the working conditions of our teams and we have improved the customer experience and the proximity to their needs, helping millions of people to live more sustainably at home with affordable but also functional, design and quality products.
We are tireless #activists for #positiveimpact on people and the planet, and we work to make sustainability #affordable for everyone: because the world will not be sustainable until we can all afford it.
We never give up on creating a better everyday life for the many people, that is why, in these difficult times, we invested 90 million euros in lowering prices (also of many of our most iconic products, as MALM collection, por example!)
And finally, the most important thing: the hard work, talent and leadership of our colleagues, from each and every one of the different positions in the company, not only make all of the above possible but also make us the best company of the world.
This wonderful video will explain you better how was our last fiscal year! Enjoy!
