First Customer Live on CityFibre’s Cambridgeshire Project Gigabit Broadband Build CityFibre have announced that the first customer has just gone live on their new full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network in Cambridgeshire (England) under the £69m state aid supported Project Gigabit rollout contract (Lot 5), which began its construction phase back in February 2024 (contract was awarded in March 2023). The original contracted announcement stated that a total of “around” 45,000 premises (hard-to-reach homes and businesses) in the county are ultimately expected to be covered by the new digital infrastructure (here). The UK's altnet fibre broadband provider space is heating up.  CityFibre, a major player in the alternative network provider market, has just acquired Lit Fibre in an all-share deal. This move expands CityFibre's footprint by a significant 300,000 premises, solidifying its position as a significant competitor to Openreach. CityFibre's acquisition follows hot on the heels of a string of similar transactions, including its purchases of FibreNation, Entanet, KCOM, and Redcentric's national networks. This consolidation suggests a fast maturing market that has long been forecast. This has been seen as a natural evolution for the market that has long been seen as ruinously expensive and in many cases simply meant that many providers covered (literally) the same ground. The return on investment was simply not there for so many providers in the same geography and this consolidation is long overdue. However, some concerns may start to emerge: ⚪ Impact on innovation: Will consolidation stifle innovation in the altnet space? ⚪ Price competition: Will consolidation ultimately lead to higher prices for consumers? At the moment, it is clear that economics is trumping strategy and policy but there will be a point where regulators are keen to ensure the market structure continues to support the policy ambitions. [SETICS STTAR] '57% of the UK premises have full-fibre access, says Ofcom' by Total Telecom "The report found that 78% of the UK is now covered by gigabit-capable broadband, which is an 8% increase on last year, when there was 70% coverage. The number of premises without access to what Ofcom class as “decent” broadband is just 61,000, or 0.2% of the UK. Additionally, it was found that 57%, or 17.1 million premises have access to a full-fibre network, which is a huge increase of 4.6 million premises, or 15 percentage points on last year. Northern Ireland takes the lead in terms of full-fibre, with 91% of homes having access. However, according to broadband expert at Broadband Genie Alex Tofts, this figure means the UK is lagging behind other European countries such as Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Norway and France." BDUK Analysis Shows Benefits of UK Phase 3 Superfast Broadband Project The Government has posted an updated State Aid evaluation of the previous ‘Superfast Broadband Programme’ (UK National Broadband Scheme), which specifically examines the final Phase 3 of the project to extend “superfast” (30Mbps+) coverage – run between 2016 and 2022. Suffice to say, it finds various economic and coverage benefits.
