Juneteenth falls right in the middle of one of the world's most famous and largest creative festivals, Cannes Lions! For the advertising and creative world, there is no getting around it — it’s the busiest and most festive time of year for our industry. So what happens when you need to work through an important holiday? Earlier this year, our team spoke with the DEI team at Cannes about creative ways to honor Juneteenth when you still have to be on and connected for the international festival. One idea was working with brands like Because Of Them We Can, whose main focus is to shine a light on Black History and to share stories of the world's first. What better way to honor the spirit of Juneteenth than celebrating the first creatives that paved the way so people of all backgrounds can attend Cannes, and achieve success in our industry. In the tender years of childhood, being part of a minority carries an unspoken understanding that you're expected to shoulder not just triple, but tenfold the burden of effort compared to the norm. It's a weight borne from the earliest of days, ingrained within us almost instinctively. To be part of a minority is to exist under a perpetual spotlight, subjected to the scrutinizing gazes of judgment and doubt. There's little opportunity for justification or defense; instead, we funnel all that simmering frustration, all that raw energy, into our endeavors: fueling them with an intensity of passion that burns brighter than a thousand suns, informed by a depth of knowledge that rivals the ocean's depths, and guided by an emotional intelligence so acute it borders on prescience. Presently, I find myself basking in the glow of fulfillment as the Assitant Restaurant Manager of one of Italy's most illustrious venues, Phi Beach. My heart swells with gratitude towards Luciano and the entire team, individuals who possessed the foresight to see beyond the superficial, who chose to believe in my potential when others opted for skepticism. The only black manager in the whole country. Moreover, I stand at the helm of an international enterprise specializing in event management, orchestrating projects that span the globe with a finesse born of experience and an unwavering commitment to excellence. Each endeavor, a symphony of dedication and determination, resounding with the echoes of countless hours invested behind the scenes, away from the limelight. Reflecting on the journey that has brought me to this moment, I am awash with a profound sense of appreciation towards myself for having navigated the labyrinthine corridors of adversity to emerge triumphant on the other side. In a world where the voices of minorities are often drowned out by the cacophony of the majority, I have learned to harness the power of my own voice, to amplify it until it reverberates with an intensity that cannot be ignored. I extend my gratitude to the trials that tested my mettle, to the tribulations that tempered my spirit, and to the individuals who, whether through kindness or cruelty, played a part in shaping the indomitable force of will that propels me forward. When faced with the daunting expanse of an uncertain future, it is not enough to simply trust the process; we must become the architects of our own destiny, forging a path forward with unwavering resolve and unyielding determination. For even amidst the darkest of nights, when all hope seems lost and the shadows threaten to engulf us, it is our steadfast belief in the power of our dreams that serves as the guiding light, illuminating the way forward with a brilliance that transcends the confines of mere existence. In the end, it is not the obstacles we encounter that define us, but rather how we choose to surmount them to soar ever higher towards the limitless expanse of the heavens above. #overtoure

📢 When things are going wrong in society we typically look for people to blame, we look for past underlying problems or deeply ingrained systemic issues. But what do we do when things are going right? Or, on the right track? I often hear silence in this case, I don't hear celebration of the accomplishments, I don't see or hear public congratulations, I don't even see or hear thank you. And so we wonder, what is wrong with society? Why don't we ever amplify the good? For the most part we humans are ungrateful creatures, we wake up everyday with and expectation to be alive, not knowing at anytime it (life) can be taken, we don't appreciate the days of our visitation, when what we've worked for is presently before us, instead we ignore, continue to complain about what we don't have instead of appreciating what we do have, all as it passes by. A few months ago I was introduced to Mark Harrison by the gracious Hugh Lawson (he/him) . More importantly I was introduced to the incredible network at the BTI, Black Talent Initiative Mr. Harrison and his team Hildah (Otieno) Juma and Lushwana Anderson-Stewart (Incredible humans) deserve a standing ovation and recognition on every platform, stage and TV network, the work they are actually doing in the community is commendable. They offer opportunities to share stories, network at numerous in person events and learn from industry leaders at the Friday speaker series. So many doors have been opened to me and many others through this network and it's not taken for granted. I deeply appreciate what the BTI is doing in our community. Our organization and myself as an individual has grown because of it. If we take a step back to observe the current Social Corporate landscape, you'll see that the doors are open, i dont care how slightly, its open and that's what matters, you don't need to kick but merely knocking will be sufficient, heck in some cases you may be given a key. But, don't expect anyone to drag you in, you must make a decision to enter, and please, when you get in, show appreciation for those who have guided and helped you along the way. Wholeheartedly agreeing with Paul Carrick Brunson, it's essential for everyone, irrespective of skin color, to confidently embrace and say "Black." Far from being a negative or derogatory term, "Black" signifies a rich community, a vibrant culture, and undeniable beauty. It's a word that should be spoken with pride and devoid of fear. Understanding that "Black" encapsulates a collective identity and a celebration of culture, we all play a role in fostering inclusivity and breaking down unfounded apprehensions associated with the term. In echoing Paul Carrick Brunson's sentiment, let's collectively recognize the power and positivity inherent in saying "Black." By doing so, we contribute to dismantling stigmas and promoting a world where cultural diversity is not just acknowledged but celebrated. Embracing the term "Black" with openness and respect is a step towards fostering a more unified and understanding society.
