Self-care Sunday! As we approach the end of the year, it's natural to reflect on missed opportunities. But as a Clinical Research Professional and Site Network Owner, I realize that I didn't miss anything important. I was exactly where I needed to be, making impactful decisions and changes while balancing so many important roles - from mom and wife to leader and change maker. It's all about finding balance and making every moment count. And sometimes, that means celebrating personal victories, like my son's undefeated team at FSU or my daughters' growing beauty business. It also means celebrating professional milestones, like our Site Network's new operations and partnerships in West Palm, Dallas and Louisiana. So, let's take a deep breath and remember that even when we feel out of place, hard work and dedication will always pay off. As I tell my Site Staff, the future of medicine depends on quality data collected by efficient clinical trials. Hi everyone! Mark Maxfield here, CEO of The Cottages Assisted Living & Memory Care. Those who work for me know that culture is one of the most important things to me for my company. I hired a company President a little over a year ago, which has allowed me to work on the growth and culture of my company. Culture is often what you see, hear, and feel when you walk into your place of business. For me it would be one of our assisted living communities. Recently we had all of our community summer BBQs. I was able to go to ten of them and they were fantastic. I’ve been very impressed with how many people from our other communities showed up to help their sister communities. They assisted with preparing the meals, setting up decorations, and cleaning up. It involved a lot of work. So, my message for you leaders this month is, are you fostering an environment in your culture where people feel comfortable helping other people do their jobs? That means you have to be ok with cross training and cross supporting, so that people don’t feel siloed and like it’s a competition. It shouldn’t feel like a competition. Instead, it should feel like, this is our team. This is our company. How can we help each other to be successful? That’s one thing that I’ve noticed that is really improving in our company. I’m so proud of that and great job everyone! As a leader that is something you can look forward to as well. Making sure that everyone feels safe so that they feel like they can help everyone. In so doing, your entire company will be successful. In order to compete, we should aggressively provide every possible incentive to help people, businesses and developers choose downtown and redevelop our spaces in a financially viable way. We need to provide as many choices as possible to match the many diverse needs. Residential, yes, but also schools and daycares, groceries, more diverse food options, better traffic/urban planning, mixed use, green spaces, and more arts. Why does anyone go downtown unless it’s for work? What if we could attract a large arts initiative, similar to Meow Wolf, or a major public art museum ( the Speed is great, but not downtown). A shopping district? Food courts or a public market on par with other major cities. We need to unleash the collective imagination on how to revitalize downtown and go to extreme measures to secure it. The CEO of Bunkhouse Hospitality chose Nulu to build Hotel Genevieve because it felt right with his brand. I ask you, what is the brand for our downtown beyond tourism? How do we give it back to the city?

Reflecting on the past year, I find myself reliving many lightbulb moments and celebrating those sweet victories that make it all worthwhile. I am proud to be part of a dedicated team— a team that is passionate about healthcare and serving some of the most vulnerable populations. Leveraging innovative technologies, we streamline processes, enhance access to care, and provide invaluable tools and resources to support our healthcare providers collectively. From our cutting-edge marketplace to AI-driven credential management tools and seamlessly integrated staff scheduling solutions that improve accuracy and efficiency, our team works tirelessly to develop meaningful tools that quickly generate positive outcomes. But beyond the technical advancements, what ignites my passion is the human impact achievable through the integration of technology in healthcare. So, I’ve been the Interim Chief of Staff to the Executive Director of the Port for the last 10.5 months. Which is a job I don’t want. But YOU should totally apply!! Now, you may be saying to yourself, “Eric, if it’s such a great job, then why don’t you want the permanent gig?” To which I would say “Mind your own beeswax.” Which is a phrase that people use to avoid saying the word “business” which is weird because it’s not like trying to avoid cursing by saying “H-E-Double Hockey Sticks”. As a side note, I went to a costume New Year’s party one year at Consolidated Works (of blessed memory) dressed as H-E-Double Hockey Sticks, with two hockey sticks in my hands, which was funny but challenging for alcohol consumption. My general theory is that people use “beeswax” because they’re worried that if they say “mind your own business” then people will start singing “It’s Business Time” by Flight of the Conchords, which was amusing the first thousand times but now I could do without. Not to be confused with the very strange “It’s Time for Business” video that the Seattle Chamber made, full of cameos from such luminaries as Governor Christine Gregoire: https://lnkd.in/g2tYKGBp. Not to be confused with Courtney Gregoire, who was a Port Commissioner, and so we’ve come full circle! Wait, where was I? Oh yes, the Port is a great place to work, Executive Director Metruck is a great guy to Chief of Staff for, and you get to engage in all sorts of amazing organizational, management, and policy issues/decisions/projects/initiatives. And, while we don’t make beeswax at the Port (although we probably move beeswax cargo through our aviation and maritime gateway), we do raise bees on the airfield and partner with a local nonprofit to jar and sell the honey!
