POWERING THROUGH THE STORMS: Power outages were fortunately kept to a minimum during Monday's outbreak of damaging storms in SWEPCO's three-state service territory. Those who lost power saw it restored within hours. That's credited, in part, to our crews who were busy before, during and after the storms. What you need to know when the power goes out Severe storms can happen any time of year in Pennsylvania. We put together this article with what you need to know when the power goes out. If your power goes out, you may have to contact your local power provider to report an outage or get an estimated restore time.  Do not call 911 to report the outage. Some utility companies provide an online outage map. 

The Key bridge discussion is very revealing in how we view the obligations of the public sector vs. the private sector to the public. I have read countless posts and articles about "how could the bridge not be engineered for this collision" and rightfully lots of posts about how bridges could be defended better from vessel collisions. I have NOT seen one post about how this could have been avoided in the first place. Why are these massive ships not required to have tug boat assistance when operating around critical infrastructure? How could this ship not have emergency systems to allow it to navigate during a power outage? The same conversation happened with the Norfolk Southern derailment. People hammered the government for letting this happen despite the fact that it was privately owned infrastructure and a publicly traded corporation that were responsible for the accident. I guess my question is why are we so quick to focus the blame on government agencies over the private sector when these types of accidents happen?

Here is a quick overview of how GP&L and other utilities prioritize power restoration efforts during an outage: • Crews are assigned to make repairs to equipment that will bring electricity back on for the largest groups of customers. Power lines that serve hundreds of customers are repaired first. Then, crews can work on the power lines that are inside neighborhoods. • Next, smaller groups of customers are brought online. An example is a cluster of homes served by the same transformer. • Finally, service lines to individual homes are repaired. In August, 1,160 of our region's customers experienced the second Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) of the year. Crews confirmed damage on a circuit near Round Mountain and the Pit River not far from Burney. This photo shows that damage: A floating conductor, or a conductor that is no longer resting in its insulator. It was damaged as a result of a broken tie wire when the line was de-energized.    Had that powerline not been de-energized, a spark could have led to an ignition that ultimately could have started a 4,700-acre fire that would have burned in an area with 86 buildings and where 65 people live. While PSPS remains a last resort, it is critical that we underground more powerlines to make everyone and everything safe and reduce the risk of wildfires by nearly 98%.
