The U.S. industrial sector is responsible for a whopping 30% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. Why? The intense heat needed to make essentials like steel, concrete, and chemicals. But here's the promising part: Nuclear energy could help slash these emissions. Curious about how advanced nuclear technologies could accelerate industrial decarbonization? Check out our latest Closer Look brief. 👉 https://lnkd.in/eGi2B4fQ #nuclearenergy #advancednuclear #industrialdecarbonization #energypolicy

What is this thing!? It's a (dummy) nuclear fuel bundle from a pressurised heavy-water reactor. This single bundle could meet my lifetime electricity needs 2½× over. ⚛️💡😎 And during that time, it would emit no carbon dioxide. Uranium is the most energy dense fuel we know of. Kilogram-for-kilogram, it contains ~ 100,000× more energy than coal (the world's biggest source of power). That also means there's little in the way of waste. If I powered my entire lifetime using uranium, all of the high-level nuclear waste would barely fill a wine glass. Probably the best example of energy transition failure out there. Germany's energy mix has a carbon intensity of 800 grCO2/kwh (26th of Sep), compared with less than 20 grCO2/kwh for nuclear power. How long can the German Energiewende go on? #energytransition #germany #coal #energymix #carbon #GermanEnergiewende
