Engineers are well-suited for internal auditing due to their industry insights and operational understanding
Myth: Internal auditors are accountants by training. Fact: Engineers can be internal auditors. Don't get confused with external auditors who focus on proving accuracy of financial statement, thus, naturally accountants by training. Internal audit, on the other hand, involves assessment on operations and processes of an organisation, in term of effectiveness of internal controls and compliance with policies & procedures. Hence, you will find internal auditors having experience as diverse as the operations they audit. In my previous internal audit department (a public-listed petrochemical corporation), I have experienced reliability & mechanical engineers, operation superintendent, and marketing specialist as colleagues, besides the "more common" chartered accountants and finance executives. Experienced engineers are highly valued for internal auditor positions, especially in energy, manufacturing, construction or IT/digital organisations. Here are some points why engineers can be good internal auditors: 1. Business acumen and knowledge on operations are crucial for successful audit execution. While you can gain the information through reading (manual, procedures) and asking (interviews, sharing sessions), nothing beats hands-on experience. 2. Engineers are often characterised as curious, analytical, problem solver, practical and factual. These traits are very handy for auditing. 3. Engineers are trained in hazard and risk management concept. Remember your process safety lectures on ALARP principle? Or during HAZOP where we identify hazard and consequence, and assess the safeguarding (controls)? Those are quite similar to risk management principle and tools used in internal audit.
