❗️We're going to California! Our 22nd annual meeting of the “Global Atlanticists” starts today! ❓What is the “Global Atlanticists" Network? 👉🏻The "Global Atlanticists" Network, started by the FES DC in 2003, is a bipartisan transatlantic network of German, Canadian and U.S. decisionmakers and key policy advisors. ❗️As our flagship program, the network was founded to nurture the shared ideals of the transatlantic relationship: democratic values, robust trade, and the NATO alliance rooted in collective security. The goals of the network are to: 👉🏻Provide an environment for a straightforward transatlantic dialogue on German, American, and transatlantic foreign, security, and development policy 👉🏻Improve the transatlantic framework for managing different economic, political, and military capacities 👉🏻Build up and strengthen personal networks. 💬🤝🏻 Since 2003, the Global Atlanticists network makes an annual trip with distinguished Canadian, German and US-American decision-makers to partner with respective activists and social democratic policymakers abroad.

Flash Panel: NATO 5/1 @ 4 pm in MU La Raza Room Seventy-five years ago, the United States helped to create the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, a transatlantic mutual defense alliance whose founding document famously declared that an attack on one is an attack on all. Since its founding, NATO has helped to maintain peace in Europe and expanded to include 32 nations, most recently Finland and Sweden. But the future of NATO is unsure—the upcoming presidential election might alter America's relationship to the alliance . This panel will explore NATO's historical origins, its relevance today, and it's potential future. Panelists will include Dr. John Bawden (History), Dr. Steve Shay (History), Dr. Paul Wanke (History), and Dr. Alison Johnston (Political Science).

Historical Context: These institutions were established after World War II to promote international cooperation and stability, but they were primarily designed by Western nations. This historical context has led to a perception that these institutions are inherently biased towards the interests of the U.S. and its allies.

Its World Space Week! As we all seek to highlight the value of space, I thought I would highlight some of the thought pieces related to national security and the space sector. They are all very relevant. Please let me know of other recent research/reports of interest to Australia, space and national security. Australia’s north and space, Malcolm Davis, 2023 https://lnkd.in/gCbzcZkX Why you should read it: the case for sovereign space launch and for expansion of space hubs, the impact of the funding cuts and the opportunities for space businesses in the northern part of Australia. Australia as a Space Power: Combining Civil, Defence and Diplomatic Efforts, Dr. Cassandra Steer, 2021 https://lnkd.in/gTXj3ejd Why you should read it: One of the most eloquent outlines of the interlinking aspects between civil, defence, research sectors and international diplomacy. AUKUS in Space, Philip Citowicki, 2022 https://lnkd.in/gexPSEit Why you should read it: Heard of AUKUS? Pillar 2 has technology development and space is specifically mentioned. This is a short and easy to understand summary. Catching up in the space race isn’t a moon shot, Alan Dupont, 2021 https://lnkd.in/g4KazZqq Why you should read it: Diplomacy, with a focus on China. Indication that China is the second most powerful space nation. Image credit: Northrop Grumman
