Hellenic Cables, the cables segment of Cenergy Holdings, is pleased to announce our successful participation in a groundbreaking laboratory study investigating the behavioural effects of varying electromagnetic field (EMF) levels on commercially exploited flatfish. Offshore electricity transport requires subsea cables, which generate EMFs. Anecdotal evidence suggests that EMFs can influence flatfish behaviour, causing concerns in the fishing community. However, the evidence is thin, prompting the need for more research. We joined forces with industry leaders to study EMF impacts on commercially important flatfish species to bridge this knowledge gap and facilitate fact-based discussions among sea users. The FlatEMF initiative, a joint project between 50Hertz Transmission GmbH, EirGrid Group, Europacable, TenneT, and RGI Group, aimed to investigate the effects of AC cables on adult flatfish through bottom trawling, develop and validate an EMF model with field measurements, and disseminate knowledge for informed discussions. Konstantina Bitsi, Senior Design Engineer at Hellenic Cables, who participated in the Phase One EMF modelling study stated: "We are pleased to have participated in an initiative aiming at advancing our understanding of the impact of magnetic fields produced from HVAC and HVDC submarine cables on marine ecosystems. Through collaborative efforts, we have contributed to the development of modelling guidelines to accurately estimate these magnetic fields. " Andreas Chrysochos, our other participant's R&D Senior Manager at Hellenic Cables, added: "Hellenic Cables' involvement reflects our commitment to environmental stewardship and scientific rigor. We believe the findings will enhance our understanding of EMF effects on marine life and contribute to developing environmentally friendly submarine power cable systems." Stay tuned for updates on Phase Two of the project. For more information read here: https://lnkd.in/dc5njcEY

1moI have seen over the year alot of flatfish using surface laid cables as shelter .....however if they could detect buried cables this would be very useful to understand how they do that
