Servant Leader I Strategist I Collaborator I Value Producer I Life Science Executive (all postings/comments made are my personal views)
For decades I've had the distinct honor to work in our amazing healthcare ecosystem that provides care to millions of patients annually. At the same time I've watched patient access to healthcare be a real struggle for many and even occasionally myself. Not surprisingly patient access challenges are amplified among some communities which contributes to poorer outcomes across many diseases including kidney disease, cancer, cardiovascular disease, etc. Fortunately the patient access struggle has evolved and expanded to include health equity. Yet I wonder when will it be time for us to individually and collectively decide to "do unto others as I would have them do unto me" (when it comes to healthcare access)? To create, in effect, "patient equity"? Patient equity: where patients come first and experience the healthcare they need to optimize their health outcome. Or maybe I am being naive? If so, that's okay. I prefer to stick with optimism. Patient equity will be an aspiration!

Thank you Kankercentrum UZGent for the invitation to help spread the message of the importance of exercise in cancer. Het World Health Organization rehabilitation 2030 initiative, also for oncology, draws attention to the profound unmet need for rehabilitation worldwide. The initiative marks a new strategic approach for the global rehabilitation community by emphasizing that: 1. Rehabilitation should be available for all the population and through all stages of the life course. 2. Efforts to strengthen rehabilitation should be directed towards supporting the health system as a whole and integrating rehabilitation into all levels of health care. 3. Rehabilitation is an essential health service and crucial for achieving universal health coverage. With ageing populations, and an increase in the number of people living with chronic disease, rehabilitation is a priority health strategy for the 21st century that uniquely contributes to optimising the functioning of the population. #kankercentrumuzgent #uzgent #prevalidatie #revalidatie #prehabilitation #rehabilitation #oncology #movingcancercare #who #whorehabilitation2030initiative #excerciseincancer

🔍 Spotlight on Healthcare Access in B.C. The Government of British Columbia has pledged to fund follow-up ultrasounds for breast cancer detection, but there's a critical gap: the availability of these essential services. Despite the commitment, many patients face long waits or travel long distances due to a shortage of ultrasound clinics. This situation underscores a significant challenge in our healthcare system – ensuring that financial support translates into tangible, accessible care for those in need. Addressing this discrepancy is crucial to improving outcomes and providing timely, life-saving diagnostics. Let's advocate for better resource allocation and infrastructure to support our healthcare promises. Did you know that two thirds of healthcare resources used at end-of life are used in home- and community-based care? Why do we know so little about end-of-life resources use for causes of death other than cancer? Our study team -Gudrun Waaler Bjørnelv Emily Burger Eline Aas Liv Augestad Lisbeth Thoresen - found that healthcare use and costs vary considerably by cause of death. Our disease-specific findings enable decision-makers to make more informed resource-allocation decisions for all causes of death and differentiated for all levels of formal care (primary, secondary, and home- and community-based care). Use our findings in modelling to improve healthcare planing and resource allocation! #regforsk #ism #heled #hszg #HarvardChan Find our open access article here: https://lnkd.in/eG6WQEe7.
