"Through the looking Glass" by me (1 of 12 within this portfolio)
I was intrigued by several brilliant photographers who concentrated on self-image. Photographer Cindy Sherman was my main influence. Cindy Sherman is an American photographer noted for her study and depiction of identity, challenging social norms and preconceptions. She arrived at a time when mass media was becoming our primary mode of entertainment, and she responded by appropriating such images and social constructions, incorporating them into her art. Cindy Sherman's photographs are mainly viewed as feminist art, and since they are satirical portrayals of women, they highlighted how women are expected to obey societal conventions.
with her influence my main mission was to portray female oppression within the arts and all other systems. At this point in my journey, I knew I wanted to create a feminism-inspired portfolio and explore the defining features that restricted women's worth to what we could provide the patriarch rather than as individuals.
I began to ponder what exactly it was that restricted women, and I realised it was our bodies. Our bodies have been used for what they can offer sexually rather than for their athletic, artistic, and other potential, and the male gaze has hampered women's economic, political, and intellectual advancement, requiring women to take the initiative to create a safer society.
