It’s International Womens Week and true to form, the same as BHM, I have already been asked to speak … for free. Companies show their real commitment by putting on events that have no budget. Imagine walking into a shop and wanting to furnish a room with “no budget” … it just seems beyond ridiculous doesn’t it? “ We would love you to speak about your experiences working in male dominated environments, but have no budget for the whole event, does this effect your ability to be a part of it” Simply - yes it does. “Also while we are speaking, do you have any capacity to do a quid pro quo event” this is corporate speak for FREE, not get paid to shoot an event. Bring thousands of pounds of equipment I have invested in to make my living with out to be used for FREE. Turn away paid commissions because I have committed to work for FREE ? Women are already paid less for their labour. Black ppl are are already paid less for their labour. Creatives are constantly being asked to work for exposure. Belonging to all three of these groups … imagine…. The icing on the cake , this was from a government department … I said I would post this light hearted take on the serious issue of being asked to work for free, each time I was asked to work for free, so here it is again … #iwd #internationalwomensday #iwd2024 #speaker #internationalwomensmonth

"Through the looking Glass" by me (1 of 12 within this portfolio) I was intrigued by several brilliant photographers who concentrated on self-image. Photographer Cindy Sherman was my main influence. Cindy Sherman is an American photographer noted for her study and depiction of identity, challenging social norms and preconceptions. She arrived at a time when mass media was becoming our primary mode of entertainment, and she responded by appropriating such images and social constructions, incorporating them into her art. Cindy Sherman's photographs are mainly viewed as feminist art, and since they are satirical portrayals of women, they highlighted how women are expected to obey societal conventions. with her influence my main mission was to portray female oppression within the arts and all other systems. At this point in my journey, I knew I wanted to create a feminism-inspired portfolio and explore the defining features that restricted women's worth to what we could provide the patriarch rather than as individuals. I began to ponder what exactly it was that restricted women, and I realised it was our bodies. Our bodies have been used for what they can offer sexually rather than for their athletic, artistic, and other potential, and the male gaze has hampered women's economic, political, and intellectual advancement, requiring women to take the initiative to create a safer society. #photography #arthistory #artevaluation
