When will we be enough? I recently met with a brand about partnering with my show, the Streamy Awards, and after I touted our record-breaking 27 million views, they asked, “yes but have you considered putting it on television?” Fifteen years into this show, and I’m still answering this question. Thankfully, one year Viacom bought the show and put it on cable TV, so when I tell them the digital platforms are a better fit, it doesn’t sound like the rationalization of a loser who never even got the chance. But are we losers? Why does our industry—social video, the creator economy, non-linear entertainment, whatever you want to call it—still seem to have a chip on its shoulders when it comes to old media? In his open letter to the community, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan mentioned how “the stark divide” between major studios and content creators has all but vanished now. But he still had to say it. These were the headlines coming out of YouTube’s announcement: "YouTube now gets 1 billion hours of watch time on TVs each day," "YouTube TV is poised to surpass the leading satellite providers soon, and could have more subscribers than cable rivals in the next few years." Why are we still defining our value with respect to TV? Is there perhaps still a stigma? Relative to its reach, TV still makes so much more money than digital. That’s the one thing old media got right: the value of scarce entertainment. But scarcity is the antithesis of scale entertainment. Universal Music Group said TikTok accounts for only 1% of its total revenue. As platforms grow and grow, how do they keep from driving value down, commodifying entertainment? If the creators win, we all win. UMG stated its core mission to help artists and songwriters “attain their greatest creative and commercial potential.” And Mohan also wrote, “this year, we’ll help policymakers and partners across the industry see the economic and entertainment value that creators bring to the table.” This is what I'm excited about. This is what may finally, really close the divide. It's been a busy start to the year, as #4Studio supercharges our Social performance in support of Channel 4's Fast Forward strategy. While we've seen growth across the board (snazzy stats further below), we've seen substantial, impressive results from YouTube - a platform that is increasingly much, much more than short-form content; indeed, it's a hugely important, ever-growing piece of the future broadcasting puzzle, as audiences continue to watch longer content on the platform (particularly via connected TVs), and consumption habits evolve at speed. YouTube has paid out >$70 billion to its partner creators over the last three years, according to the company's CEO. ICYMI: Neal Mohan published a letter yesterday outlining YouTube's top priorities for 2024. My main takeaways... 1️⃣ The Partner Program is thriving—more than 3 million channels are now registered in the revenue-sharing program. 2️⃣ The living room is YouTube’s “next frontier,” as an increasing number of top creators now receive the majority of their watchtime on TVs. 3️⃣ More generative AI experiments are coming, which appears to be a priority to Neal. We’ve all seen the statistics: ·     2.1 billion MAUs ·     50% of YouTube views are on CTVs ·     Hundreds of hours of videos uploaded every minute But let’s be clear: YouTube isn’t CTV. Even YouTube TV isn’t CTV. Don’t get me wrong. There’s obviously a place for YouTube in a video plan. But the beauty of CTV is that if offers a different kind of content experience than simply watching video. And that distinct consumption experience is an important part of every consumer’s media diet. Oh, and at a scale equal to YouTube. The week of June 26th, three shows topped 1 billion minutes viewed: Suits (3.1B) across both Netflix and Peacock, The Witcher (1.3B) on Netflix and The Bear (1B) on Hulu. A week later Suits increased to 3.6 billion minutes, The Lincoln Lawyer (1.4B) displaced The Witcher (1.1B) and The Bear dipped to a still significant 791 million minutes. Around that time, YouTube’s best performing general entertainment channel, Mr. Beast, released “$1 vs $1 Billion Yacht!” which has generated a totally respectable 185 million views. The next 9 largest US channels all featured either children’s programming like Cocomelon, music (Taylor Swift) and WWE. Consumers bring a different mindset to “TV” than they do to video. Sometimes they are looking for comfort (The Office); other times they want to immerse themselves in a high attention state (Yellowstone) and on Sunday nights they may want both routine and immersion (Succession, House of the Dragon). YouTube might bring a few minutes of entertainment like Mr. Beast, plenty of great how-to videos and, undoubtedly, hours of nursery rhymes and ABCs for toddlers. But it doesn’t have those monoculture shows that people are talking about all the time. Scripted or unscripted, premium, long-form entertainment on CTV delivers massive reach and high engagement at a par with YouTube.
