This is just one very specific example, of course, but the South Korean designer, who heads up Kia Worldwide’s Future Design Group, admits that his department is a little unconventional compared to some others, even within the wider organisation.
The Future team draws inspiration from nature and much of the role comes down to being a "thinker", he explains in this exclusive interview for Car Design Review X. But thinking alone doesn't cut it: quiet reflection and blue-sky thinking should lead to something tangible.
"If your design team is only made up of thinkers, they will make up a lot of theories, but not create so much in practice, while physical designers might only deliver the artefact without thinking. So we need to have a good balance between these two competencies."
