What’s happening Europe??? I’m closely following the preliminary results of the European elections and can’t help but wonder: do we really value climate action, democracy, and social justice? France is reportedly calling for new elections? And here in Italy? Lowest percentage of voters? Seems to be a very sad day. #EuropeanElections #ClimateAction #SocialJustice

Vice President, Europe at Breakthrough Energy. Previously, Director-General at European Commission. Views are my own, often rooted in 20+ years of experience in public policy.
‼️The Green Deal must adapt to new political realities This is what I told Jason Bordoff, host of Columbia Energy Exchange podcast, as we discussed take-aways from the recent European Parliament elections. Here’s a snapshot: “What I’ve been saying is ‘heed the lessons.’ I think now for the centrist parties to just say we are going to continue as if nothing had happened would be a mistake. Because I do think the voter was trying to send a signal that the Green Deal - at least as it is currently constituted - is challenging for a lot of people. You may have heard we had these farmers protests. We of course also still have a cost-of-living crisis. The price of energy is very high. So I think pushing on as if nothing happened will lead to a democratic backlash. However, even in the business community, no one wants to see the Green Deal abandoned. They just want to see a Green Deal with a better business case.” Listen to our conversation at the link below to learn more about some of the policy solutions that can help us design a successful reboot of the Green Deal. I know from my own experience that 'coalitions of the willing' like Energy Resilience Leadership Group can make a real difference in accelerating the deployment of emerging clean tech. And a blended finance vehicle like our EU Catalyst Partnership is a best practice of a new generation of PPPs that should become part and parcel of industrial policy in the next political cycle. #greendeal #nzia #industrialpolicy
Recent elections in the European Union shook up the continent's climate politics. Far-right parties performed well in both the EU's parliament and national governments, and the Greens lost nearly all of their gains over the past five years in the European parliament. Voters pointed to energy costs, security, and economic competitiveness as key factors in their decision-making. So what do these elections indicate about the shifting political ideology of the European Union? On this week's episode of #ColumbiaEnergyExchange, host Jason Bordoff talks with Ann Mettler, Vice President for Europe at Breakthrough Energy , about the results of the recent European elections. 🎧 Listen now: https://lnkd.in/eUpxdr8G

Globally, more voters than ever in history will head to the polls as at least 64 countries, including the #EuropeanUnion, are meant to hold national elections, the results of which could determine whether humanity can correct it's current trajectory of #GlobalWarming. Voters in five of the world’s biggest carbon-emitting territories are due to go to the polls in 2024. These regions - the United States, India, Indonesia, Russia and the European Union - represent one-third of the world’s population and about the same proportion of human-made #CarbonEmissions. Read more on how the elections in 2024 could shape #ClimateChange for decades to come via the link in our bio.
