CCPI - Climate Change Performance Index’s Post

The efforts made by the EU countries to date to reduce their emissions and comply with the Paris climate protection agreement are still far too little. This is shown by an analysis of the XDC values (XDC stands for X-Degree Compatibility) for the 27 EU member states. According to this, the European nations are between 3.1 and 5.3 °C - based on the emission intensity of the individual countries, i.e. the greenhouse gases emitted per inhabitant in the respective country, and assuming that the previous trends continue (so-called baseline scenario). Even if the already promised national climate protection measures (“Nationally Determined Contributions” – NDCs) have not yet been taken into account, it is clear how far we still have to go before we reach the goal to which the EU, together with the rest of the world community, committed itself in Paris in 2015: to limit global warming to 1.5 or at least well below 2 °C. This year's Climate Conference #COP28 raised high expectations to deliver a way forward for transformational solutions we need in this critical decade. With the outcomes of the COP28, these expectations were again only partially met. This year's UN Climate Change Conference #cop28 will take place in #dubai from 30 November to probably 12 December. The question of what role fossil fuels should still play in the future will be controversially discussed there. Some countries are calling for a complete phase-out of fossil fuels. Others are in favour of interim solutions involving carbon capture and storage (#ccs) technologies. With CCS #carbondioxide is stored permanently underground or in the seabed. So far, it has only been possible to extract and store #co2 on a small scale. This could change soon. https://lnkd.in/dYDuatjm

"We need an exit from the highway to climate hell,’ said Guterres during his major climate speech in New York. May 2024 was the warmest since weather records began. This was the twelfth month in a row that a global temperature record had been set. The UN estimates that the global average annual temperature will soon exceed the 1.5-degree mark, at least temporarily. ‘We are playing Russian roulette with our planet,’ said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday - and called for drastic measures. Guterres said that the people still had it in their hands to turn the tide. However, this would require significantly more climate protection to be implemented over the next 18 months. Germany on track for a 4.4 degrees warmer planet by 2100 In a press relase from May this year, German consultancy right° assessed and compared the climate trajectory of all 27 EU member countries based on a Business as Usual (Shared Socio-Economic Pathways -SSP- 2) trajectory. "Best" in class is Croatia with 3.1 degrees. Even the Scandinavian "poster children" on sustainability (Sweden 3.7 degrees, Denmark 4.0, Finland 4.2 degrees) don`t fare much better. If Germany was a company, would you invest in it? Have a look at all the global megacities that will have become uninhabitable by 2100 due to heatwaves, water shortages, floods and extreme weather events already at 2.7 degrees warming: https://lnkd.in/eNKmPZss 3.5 billion people will have to relocate.
