During the month of September, we celebrate Global Diversity and Inclusion at MSD. I have the privilege of being the executive sponsor for the League of Employees of African Descent (LEAD) for MSD LATAM, working with an amazing group of individuals (Tracey Brown (She/Her) Adriana Latorre Elisa Mendoza Yves Tchakomi Alexandre Alves Suellen Rodrigues Giliard Santana (He/Him) who are passionate about increasing representation, equity, and inclusion within our company and in society. September also begins Hispanic Heritage Month, an excellent opportunity to celebrate the history and contributions of Latin Americans. However, we must not forget the large population of African descendants who are often overlooked in Latin America. Let's take this moment to also recognize and honor their contributions and experience. There is still so much that I do not know or understand about the Afro-Latino/Black lived experience, but I am grateful to people like Luana Génot who is helping me understand the role corporations and leaders can play in supporting racial equity, inclusion and justice. If you are interested in learning more, I would highly recommend watching #BlackInLatinAmercia by Henry Louis Gates Jr. It is available on Amazon for purchase or streaming, but I also found the articles and comments section on the website extremely insightful. Here are two stats to pique your learning journey: * One in four Latin Americans identify themselves as people of African descent ~133M people with the majority living in Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, and Cuba *Brazil has the largest population of African descendants outside of Africa, with estimates as high as 120M people (>50% of pop.), 3X the US Black population. #HispanicHeritageMonth #AfricanDescendants #LatinAmerica #AfroLatino https://lnkd.in/g2dcYisr

Sometimes you just get lucky. I’m forever thankful to Allison Davis, a true visionary who was a driving force behind the beginning of news on the internet. Allison hired a small group of 5 to figure out how to cover 24 hours news on this new thing called the internet. Dubbed NBC Supernet, I don’t think NBC knew exactly what to do with us at first – our first offices were on the Saturday Night Floor after all. Many people asked if I could fix their computers. With Allison’s knowledge of the NBC News bureaus, we soon found pockets of producers and correspondents willing to help us. We covered presidential summits, hurricanes, the Iowa Caucuses. We shot our own video, coded interactives. Under the leadership of Allison, along with Bert Medley, our team worked with the shared purpose of using this new medium to benefit people’s lives. I recall one of the first live chats we conducted with Archbishop Desmond Tutu, where he ended the Q&A by saying perhaps this thing was a little closer to god. Of course he also laughed when he said it. Frequently, when I reported in the field, telling people where the story would appear, they were keenly interested in what news on the internet was. At the time, there was kind of a magical mystery surrounding the internet – so much so that it became a running joke for NBC News producers and correspondents looking for an answer to a random question to: “Go ask the cyberjournalist.” Supernet was all a precursor to the formation of MSNBC, the joint venture between Microsoft and NBC (eventually unjoined). Many people today don’t know that the MS in MSNBC stands for Microsoft. When the joint venture was formed, all of the NBC News programs’ websites were hosted on MSNBC.com, so our team launched Today, Dateline, Nightly News, and Meet the Press online. Navigating these two very different corporate cultures had its challenges. But we went on to create really innovative journalism as part of these shows and won some of the first digital news awards. In particular, I’m proudest of the interactive databases we created at Dateline that gave people new ways to access consumer information that really made a difference in their lives. I do think inflection points often give opportunities to those who might not normally have a straight career on-ramp, since folks who are more established in their careers might not want – or need – to risk embarking on an uncertain career journey. Working at the dawn of internet news allowed me to accomplish much more, more quickly, working in a new medium and for that I not only owe Allison my career, but the ability to earn what I would call a professional living. Like I said, sometimes you get lucky. Cheers to Allison Davis, Rachel Chamberlin Schwanewede, Mike Wu, Stephanie E. Bostic, Matt Butcher for this fun look back. Thanks NBCU Academy https://lnkd.in/eQCeQsWw

Open Forum - Featuring 2023 Mayoral Candidate Riley O'Connell. This #wpaatv program Open Forum & and resources support is available to all local candidates per WPAA-TV and Community Media Center community media producer guidelines. Political speech is considered free speech. For decades in Wallingford (CT), candidates had no access to community media resources. In 2010, Mike Brodisky, then former Town Council Chair, took up the gauntlet I threw down as community media advisor, to host a news and commentary show possibly to be called Citizen Mike. Since COVID-19, most of his productions have been produced on Zoom. but when it is 9 at night it has been and still is Citizen Mike on WPAA. Why the gauntlet? He had found himself bounced between WGTV (government) and WPAA (public) as a candidate for years. Neither would support him, suggesting it was the auspices of the other. The 2010 WPAA governance board was still unsure about any candidate's use of public access but where comfortable with a hosted opportunity for candidates as guests. On October 16th, Mike will be back in the studio with Stephanie Thomas Office of the Connecticut Secretary of the State to discuss local elections and what is next in CT. We will be sure to share. That recording will be made available to all CT CommunityTV channels shortly thereafter. His show remained the easiest way for any candidate to access community media resources because he handles all producer responsibilities. But a hosted show is not the same as equal access. That is the purpose of Open Forum: access for candidates to resources and the people to the candidates. Open Forum is modeled after our low-tech offerings like CommUnity Conversations (CuC). It is not a political spot. It is a digital doorknock that lets the community do the knocking. Prior to being elected SotS, Stephanie Thomas was a contributor with Bruce Conroy on an episode of CuC. The CuC participants have a contributor role. They can not be totally hands-off but they do not need to learn how to operate a camera, switcher, or edit. Community Media is a democracy movement. If we can not enable transparency for local elections, local issues, and debate on critical matters of public interest who will? Of possible interest: The raw recording of the Q&A was simulcast to our website, LIVE TV, and Facebook Live. Approximately 60 community members participated. This post-production TV version linked below took about 10 hours to complete using content from some of those with questions and the candidate's volunteer crew.
