🌟 My exciting Journey at CBRE: Reflecting on the Past, Anticipating the Future 🚀 Six months ago, I hesitated to postpone my final year of university for a placement year at CBRE. Yet, the prospect of self-development and career growth beckoned, making the decision to join CBRE one of the best choices I've made. Gratitude fills me as I look back on this transformative journey. Settling into the corporate environment quickly, I embraced challenges and took a proactive approach to problem-solving, leading to the most significant six months of self-development in my career. 🛠️ Skills & Traits Acquired: - Adaptability: Being responsive to change and embracing challenges has allowed me to become adaptable to my work environment and prepare for further challenges. - Confidence and Resilience: I've learned that every failure is another lesson learned. This has allowed me to come back from failure and improve my approach when working. - Strong Work Ethic: The challenges encountered fuelled a commitment to a diligent work ethic. This mindset has been key to my development. As I envision 2024 and the second half of my placement, I'm excited for January as it marks a pivotal moment when I map the direction of my placement, ready to delve into new knowledge and skills. 🌐 Exploring Passions within CBRE: - New challenges await, and further self-development is on the horizon. - The next six months will focus on exploring my passions within the vibrant CBRE landscape. If our office is our second home, then our team is our second family. I'm grateful for the talented colleagues surrounding me, offering insights and industry knowledge. Their presence has been integral to my development at CBRE, and I cannot imagine what this placement would have been like without them. In closing, I express gratitude for the opportunity I've had, as CBRE has been more than a workplace; it's been a platform for growth. 🤷♂️ 'Do you realise what you just did?' I was like, 'Nope, just doing my job with Value Stream Mapping.' Turns out, I did more than just finding ways to optimise the process between CBRE and Honeywell. I was helping people voice their frustrations, especially about the parts they didn't like. 💬 Mind-blowing, right? That conversation changed how I view my work. It's not just about meeting goals or improving customer-supplier processes. Listened to the recorded JLL Global Careers Week sessions, great content!!! One of the questions asked during a panel session to the 4 executives on the panel was “what has kept you at JLL?”. I would like to publicly answer that myself as a 6 year JLL “veteran”…, I know, still young in my JLL career. 😌 1. Entrepreneurial Culture 2. Collaborative Culture For number 1. The autonomy afforded to JLL’rs and freedom to make decisions and be involved with the business is second to none from my previous employer experiences. I will never forget something that was told to me by my former boss in my previous role. I was new to the role and the role took me into a new mindset, one of changing from specialist to generalist. However, as we tend to do, I kept going back to what I was most comfortable with and that was getting involved with the physical plant and helping my team troubleshoot equipment issues. My boss called me up one day and flat out said “Randy, you are not being paid to help troubleshoot equipment, you are being paid to run a professional services line”. Pow, that was a “come to Jesus” moment for me and I appreciated the candor. There was another time, during my first role and account with JLL that I will never forget either. I kept asking my boss before making decisions. I do not know why, I was just hesitant to make a lot of the day to day operational decisions. My boss said “Randy, I trust you to make the right call, you have the experience and skills to make the right decisions for the client and for JLL, just make them. Stop asking and just make the decision”. Another one of those moments of clarity for me and a moment of open candor from my boss that I appreciated. For number 2: I just love the collaborative environment of JLL, period. No one tries to be the hero. No one tries to be number one on the team. And most certainly, no one ever says “just do it because I said so”. Every account, every role I have had, it is always a One JLL effort with everyone coming together, bringing their unique skills and experiences to the conversation, and driving the bus forward. I’ve always found the rankings of the Best Places to Work to be an interesting and a suspicious list at the same time. Initially, out of college, I wanted to know which companies made the list so that I could work for them and learn how they approach the business and the running of the company. I wanted to learn from the best. However, I didn’t trust the rankings absolutely. I have an internal acceptance that anything is possible: good and bad. So, when I see a ranking, I realize that right now, at the moment of this ranking coming out, there are employees who are loving their jobs and those who might be waiting for 5 pm to rush home, there are people who are getting promotions and those who’s performance might not be meeting job expectations, there are people who can’t wait to get up in the morning and go on another journey with their co-workers and friends and those who are anxious half of the day Sunday and have a hard time falling asleep because they are dreading the meeting they are going to join on Monday morning. All of this is possible. All of it. We choose how we show up, every single person around us does too and on top of this unforeseen things happen, whole markets shift, the world evolves. And all of this is ok. I’ve observed the complex organism of Fidelity for almost 5 years now. I’m fascinated by it. I learn, grown and am challenged every day. I have also observed the company learn things about itself and pivot.  I’m very proud to work in a company which is brave and willing to reflect on how things are going at different levels of the company and continuously improve. It means a lot for a continuous improver like myself. #fidelityassociate

Some personal news: I am in my final days as CEO at Cornwall Insight after deciding last autumn that the time had come to move on. After 11 years & 7 as CEO, it was far from an easy decision for me to make. I have been fortunate enough to hold some very exciting roles in my career, but leading this group of people has been the privilege of my professional life. We have been pretty bold in our strategy, and had more than our fair share of successes and achievements together. It has, I admit, become more than just a job, & formed a strong basis of meaning in my life. But everything has a natural time, and no job goes on forever I thank our customers who have made the last decade so enjoyable. Without your ambition, and drive, we would have no one to advise, no one to shape our insight, and no one to hold us to account. It is a big responsibility to serve you. I hope we have lived up to the trust you placed in us during my time as CEO, & that Cornwall Insight carries on doing so for many more decades to come. I am very confident it will My thanks too to the people at Cornwall Insight that I have worked alongside - past & present. You accepted the challenge to grow & improve, no matter the discomfort of change. And you gave me strength to do the same. We have always been a curious & passionate bunch. But we have added an ambitious purpose, a learning mentality, empowerment through accountability, & accepted the standards set by demanding values. I have tried my best to hold a mirror up to your strengths, illuminate blind spots, help you develop new capabilities, & to encourage you to learn from mistakes, without fear of failure. In return you have given me the repeated benefit of the doubt, and tolerated my many errors. The plaudits & successes belong to you & I hope that you take huge self esteem from your achievements & carry that forward to ever greater successes Suffice to say, this is a bend in the road for me, but the one the company travels on runs straight & true. The better parts of Cornwall Insight - its people & wider leadership - will go on, with pace & purpose. The transformation of our energy system, that enables so much of our existence and fuels our prosperity, is the most pressing social, environmental & economic opportunity of our time. I am certain Cornwall will continue to play its part in enabling that change, working ever closer with our customers who share our common cause: to make the improbable, possible and the extraordinary, ordinary I plan to stay involved in the energy sector through non exec, associate & board advisory positions. I hope I can help grow people & businesses more generally, & make impact where I can. When you approach the final and last run of your career years like, you know - the 4th quarter, one begins to think differently about what to do with the final time on the clock. We rarely talk about the R word because who actually retires these days? One thing I know for sure is that every day I'm grateful for lessons learned throughout my career, and it's a very long list of lessons that I keep adding to. Today I'm grateful for learning from the agency side of the business that, if you only give Clients what they ask for, you're probably not going to be in business very long. Thank you to all the creative people particularly at The Martin Agency who instilled that in me and my belief system. Maybe that's why I don't make a good "request-fulfiller," as I do my best to exceed expectations, and to be a good thought partner in helping clients solve their most critical challenges. And I'm also grateful for the first company I ever worked for, a F500 conglomerate. Recently someone told me that I have a management consulting approach in advising clients. Wait, what? Me? The comment made me reflect back on my career as to where that approach may have come in to play. The conglomerate's CEO formerly worked at Booz Allen Hamilton, and we had hired BAH to help us with business growth and extensive M&A expansion leading to record sales/net earnings for 25 years in a row. It's possible that I unknowingly picked it up from those execs that influenced the first 9 years of the 1st quarter of my career. The head of corporate accounting was my favorite as he was the consummate manager. I remember once writing a paper about him. He was young but his joints were riddled with 4th-stage rheumatoid arthritis yet he played squash every day at lunch, and was so intrumental in advancing technology even back then. He made coffee for us every morning, and I tried to beat him to the office to do it for him as he could barely hold on to the thermos. You know, the old stainless and glass green kind. Bottom line, I'm grateful to all those past and present who have helped me succeed in helping others succeed.
