Brad Davey, our VP, corporate business optimization spoke to Oliver Wyman for their report, ‘Climate Action at Scale’, produced in association with the Climate Group. The report looks at what is needed to scale up the climate transition in hard-to-abate sectors like steel. Brad talked about our focus on circularity but how, even by 2050, scrap will only meet approximately 50% of global steel demand. Therefore, breakthrough technologies are needed to reduce primary steelmaking (steel made from iron ore). He talked to the range of technologies – including green hydrogen, carbon capture and direct electrolysis - we are investing in to decarbonise our steelmaking operations, and went on to explain how the technology we choose is likely to differ from region to region, depending on the availability of clean energy, scrap and storage for carbon sequestration. Much of today’s climate actions are limited to the incremental moves that can be made under “business as usual”. To transition at scale will require something different.
We spoke to 35 climate, sustainability, and commercial leaders from some of the world's largest corporations on how they are seeking to achieve climate action at scale. Here are some of our key learnings.
