"I just can't justify spending $4 on tea 😂 But I want to hang out!" I love going to a coffee shop to work. The in and out of customers, the energy of the baristas, the bible study next to the meeting of CEOs, I just love it. What I don't love is spending $4 on something that I can have at home for a few pennies. I finally said something this morning and I can't tell you how glad I am I did. Aaron, the Barista: "So if you bring in your own cup, you automatically get 25 stars every time you use it. Basically, every 4 times you get a free one when you use your own cup." Me: "Well NOW I can justify spending that $4, Aaron. Let me run out to my car." (When I return from my car with my cup) Aaron: "Oh, you also get a 10 cent discount when you use your own cup." Me: "It just keeps getting better." (As I'm grabbing my hot tea) Aaron: "One more thing. As long as you stay in the cafe, you get free refills on all tea and coffee." Me: "Aaron you are blowing my mind this morning." Thank you, Starbucks on Olio & Olivia. And thank you, Aaron. -- What did I learn? When something bothers you, instead of assuming it's not a fit, you don't even need to know the right question to ask. Just express your concern in a respectable way and give them a chance to take care of the rest. Bonus points: slowly dripping the perks was a huge bonus. Typically I'm not getting excited about a 10 cent discount or a free refill but since it was thrown on like sprinkles at the end for free? I need to spend $200 at Starbucks to get 1 free Cold Brew... ...Contrast, to the bougie coffee shop 2 blocks away (my wife's favorite for Americanos), I get 1 free one every 10 with a stamp card. Starbucks: 2.5% Rewards. Bougie: 10% Rewards. Except, I still go to Starbucks every morning because they are the only place with Nitro Cold Brew. Getting "free" coffees doesn't sway my morning decision in the slightest. When thinking of your positioning it's not just about price or discounts. Differentiation (only one with Nitro) or brand or convenience, among others, play a part.

What if you could reset the bar for excellence? 🍩🤔 🍩 🍩 🍩 In Nashville for my work’s Christmas party, and many a people told my wife and I to try Five Daughters Bakery. We kept hearing “BEST DONUTS EVER.” And after our first couple of bites, we realized that most of these reviews were, indeed true. 🍩🍩🍩 Top 3 best donuts this pretentious foodie has ever had. And it reminded me of a lesson that my friend, local Austin coffee shop owner Marco told me. 🍩 🍩 🍩 Aaron: “Marco, you run a coffee shop and carry around a little black book with graphs and charts of how to make coffee better? 😂 Why?” Marco: “Aaron, people drink coffee their entire lives. Imagine walking into a coffee shop without knowing your life was about to change.” Aaron: “What do you mean?” Marco: “Imagine you drink coffee your entire life and then you walk into MY coffee shop, and it’s the best cup of coffee and/or the best coffee experience you’ve ever had. For the rest of your life, the bar for excellence has been reset.” Aaron: “Oh, oh wow.” 🍩🍩🍩 Just like Marco does often. Just like Five Daughters Bakery did today.
