Honoring Veterans: A Reflection on Veterans Day
On this Veterans Day, I find myself reflecting on the journey of service and sacrifice that millions of veterans, including myself, have undertaken to protect the values we hold dear. As a veteran myself from a family with generations of servicemen before me, I ask all Americans to remember the courage and commitment of our soldiers and their families who sacrificed to safeguard our freedoms, our country, our values, our communities, and families that we hold so dear.
Why Veterans Day?
Veterans Day, originally known as Armistice Day, marks the end of World War I on November 11, 1918. It is a day to pay tribute to all veterans for their selfless dedication. As we celebrate, let's also remember the significance of this historical moment and the sacrifices made by countless individuals who have served loyally and with honor throughout our nation’s history.
A Call to Action: Addressing Veteran Suicide
Tragically since 9/11, veteran suicide is the second leading cause of death for our veteran heroes. Too many veterans have returned home with deep wounds physically, mentally, emotionally. It’s time that as a nation we take collective responsibility to be aware and care about our veterans in crises. Let's keep the conversation going—open, honest, and supportive.
We Are Stronger Together
Our strength lies not only in our service but in our ability to come together as a community. Veterans Day is more than a commemoration; it's a reminder that the bonds formed in service endure beyond the uniform. Let's continue supporting each other, fostering a culture of understanding, and breaking the stigma surrounding mental health.
How Can You Help?
1. Connect: Reach out to fellow veterans and check in on their well-being.
2. Listen: Sometimes, all it takes is a willing ear. Be there for them and listen without judgment.
3. Advocate: Raise awareness about the veteran suicide rate. Advocate for mental health resources and support.
This Veterans Day, let's not only honor the past but also stand united in creating a future where no veteran feels alone or forgotten. Together, we can make a difference.
