The Power of Great Teams: Why I’d Choose My Former Travel Company During a recent interview, I was posed with a question that caught me off guard: “If you could choose any company to work for, which one would it be?” The recruiter expected me to name a renowned tech giant or a successful startup, but I surprised her with my answer. I said, without hesitation, that I would choose the travel company that had made me redundant last summer, after nearly four years of dedicated service. It might sound counterintuitive, but let me explain why. It wasn’t the allure of exotic destinations or the perks(may be a bit😊) of the travel industry that made me choose this company. It was the people, the incredible team I had the privilege of leading. We weren’t just colleagues; we were friends, and that bond has remained intact even after our professional paths diverged. So, why choose a company that let me go? Because sometimes, it’s not about the company itself; it’s about the people you work with. A great team can turn even the most challenging situations into meaningful and enriching experiences. In the end, it wasn’t just about the work we did; it was about the journey we undertook together. The friendships formed during those years are a testament to the power of collaboration and genuine connections in the workplace. This one moment changed everything for me. As I am leaving Cancun where we had our North American Kick-off this week. Back in the early '90s, right after college, I was in a job that didn't pay much and didn't make me happy. I was eager to do something significant but inexperience held me back. Then, everything changed. On a plane one day, I met someone who recognized a talent in me that I hadn't seen myself. We talked, and he introduced me to the world of software. Keep in mind, this was back when the tech world was a nascent reflection of itself today. He offered me a job, and just like that, my career in technology began. That meeting taught me a vital lesson: great opportunities can come from the most unexpected places. It wasn't just about switching to a new job; it was about understanding the power of "in the moment" encounters and being open to new directions. Now, I work in technology, focusing on making operations better in the insurance and healthcare sectors. But here's the interesting part – that chance meeting on the plane showed me how important it is to connect with people and learn from them, even before I knew what networking or mentorship meant. #CareerTransition Week No.4 – Exploring What's Next in career. Last week marked the beginning of my journey across Europe to explore my next career move, starting in the Netherlands. I had the privilege of meeting nine leaders in aviation, travel, and sustainability space to learn about their roles, career paths, and daily motivations. Alongside these insightful meetings, I enjoyed exploring Amsterdam, Haarlem, and The Hague as cities. Here are some highlights: 🧡🧡🧡Kindness During Unexpected Emotional Moments Career transitions, while exciting, come with their share of uncertainties and lingering emotions from retrenchment. During a meeting last week, with jet lag, it triggered an unexpected emotional moment. It was embarrassing because I only met the leader once. It certainly was not the preferred occasion to be emotional. “It’s okay. You are safe with me.” This brief but powerful support I received helped me get back to track very quickly. 🎁🎁🎁Unlocking New Stages in My Journey I knew I had a great meeting everytime I had the feeling of progressing through a game. At the end of each conversation, I can find myself heading towards a follow-up meeting, a new connection, a fresh idea, or a lead that drive me to my next challenge. It's like unlocking the next level in an exciting game. This iterative process of exploration and discovery keeps me excited every day. ⛹️♀️⛹️♀️⛹️♀️Role Modeling Through the Journey In Haarlem, I enjoyed a bike trip to the National Park with two wonderful women, including Sophia, a 21-year-old from Germany. Despite the rain, we had a fantastic time. At the end of our trip, Sophia gave me a big hug and said, “Thank you. By seeing you, I amnot afraid of getting old.” This heartfelt moment made me realize that how we conduct our journeys can already create a positive impact around us. Reflecting on my incredible journey with the Work and Travel 2023 program this summer! This summer, I had the privilege of participating in the Work and Travel 2023 program, where I wore multiple hats as a crew member, cook, and barista. It was an experience that has significantly enriched my life and taught me invaluable lessons: - Most important factor in job is staff: Through long shifts and challenging days, I learned that the strength of a team can make the toughest tasks feel achievable. The camaraderie and support from my colleagues made every moment worthwhile, reminding me that success isn't just about individual accomplishments, but the collective effort of a dedicated team. - The importance of family: Being away from home and my loved ones for an extended period made me realize the profound significance of family. Their unwavering support, even from afar, provided me with the motivation and strength to excel in my role. I am grateful for the bond we share, which transcends distance and time zones. - It is possible to overcome all difficulties: During this program, I experienced both the best and worst days of my life. I faced challenges that pushed me beyond my comfort zone, but each hurdle was a valuable lesson. I learned that with determination, resilience, and a positive mindset, it is possible to overcome any obstacle that comes my way. This journey has left an indelible mark on my personal and professional growth. I am now more equipped to face the complexities of the working world with a renewed sense of purpose and confidence. As I move forward, I'm excited to apply the lessons I've learned during this program to my future endeavors. What’s your healthy way to cope with adversity? I tend to lean into what I’ve always been good at, which is pushing the physical limits of my body. That said, I’ve signed up for my first 50K running race in October because… “I just felt like running!”  In the past, I’ve raised thousands of dollars to qualify for the 545-mile AIDS Lifecycle bicycle ride, completed Ironman races across the globe, and broke my body as a poor amateur elite rower with Olympic dreams. Heck, I’ll even throw in that I grew a healthy set of twins while suffering from preeclampsia and working full time in recruiting ops at Expedia Group because that is probably the ultimate physical endurance event, and I’m dedicated to what I love. :) All of these experiences have taught me lessons that have elevated me to become a better version of myself. Cue the 50K. I was recently laid off from Cognito Therapeutics, Inc. after only two short months when the market shifted and the company had to reorg. While I continue to hunt for my next (and hopefully long-term) position, my 3-year-old son is home with me. And guess what I’ve already learned, he’s an amazing training partner! He will happily accompany me for 3ish miles at my target pace of 12-15 min/mile. I’m so excited to share this experience with him! If this is the only lesson I learn from this event, I’m satisfied. Either way, it’s a nice break from the computer, a fun way to bond with my son and collect my thoughts.
