“The most patient party will often have the most leverage in contract negotiations.” Hearing Olga V. Mack say this during last week’s Contract Nerds webinar was a huge light bulb moment for me. It’s a power dynamic I’ve always experienced in negotiations, without even realizing it. I’ll never forget working with a writer on the verge of signing a major book publishing deal. One that came with a sizable advance. While I wanted to negotiate the best terms possible, my client LITERALLY couldn’t afford to wait. It was either…. ➡ Keep going with negotiations, or  ➡ Risk being evicted for failed rent payments. Needless to say, I got the deal closed! This is an unfortunate reality for a lot of creatives. One that big companies are aware of and use to their advantage in negotiations. This is why I’m a big proponent of entrepreneurship. Learning how to turn your intellectual property into protected assets that allow you to monetize your passions (on your OWN terms) goes a long way. Not only in negotiations but in the overall trajectory of your creative career, and ultimately your legacy. I’m committed to a world where creatives are empowered through entrepreneurship with the legal tools they need to amplify their brand, protect their work, and secure the bag while building wealth for generations to come. 💚 I share a lot of resources in my weekly newsletter, The Contract Corner. You can sign up using the link above! …………… P.S. Kudos to Nada Alnajafi and Contract Nerds for another excellent webinar! If you’re a lawyer or contracts professional who isn’t already plugged into this network, I strongly recommend you get connected! #negotiationtips #contractlawyer #entertainmentlawyer #creativeentrepreneurship

Absolutely. When you have infinite time, you can change virtually anything. This is why time pressure exerts such a powerful influence during negotiations. The presence of impatience, particularly when it becomes visible, regardless of how well it is masked, can significantly undermine your leverage. It’s crucial to maintain composure and manage time effectively to preserve your bargaining power and avoid conceding too much too soon. Effective negotiators understand that demonstrating patience and control over time can be a decisive factor in achieving favorable outcomes. Thank you for the shout out Casey Handy-Smith!

You’re such a great advocate in an industry that’s trying to take advantage of people who may not have the means.
