Many seeds for growth in the startup ecosystem have been firmly planted in Japan, now it is up to everyone involved to nurture those seeds for growth. In my view, there are a few key elements that will further help propel the ecosystem forward including: 1. Stronger ties with global ecosystems, capital and talent in order to import shared learnings and accelerate development of new startups. Tokyo’s startup ecosystem continues to feel needlessly isolated from global ecosystems despite recent efforts to change this, and in addition communities within Japan are often highly isolated from one another with minimal crossover between more domestic and more foreign oriented communities. 2. Tax incentives for large enterprises to buy from companies less than 3-5 years old. Unfortunately the government to GTM playbook for a lot of B2B startups to date has forced them to focus on servicing the needs of other startups and SMEa before “graduating” to enterprise deals, however, unfortunately the core customer needs at the enterprise level are often fundamentally different from startups and SMEs, causing major barriers for startups to go up market deeper into their development. 3. Experienced professionals willing to take the risk to launch a new biz. We simply don’t have enough, yet.
