Our Who I Am Foundation volunteers in #Albuquerque are conducting our 10TH ANNUAL Back-to-School Supply Drive to help children in need begin the school year with all of the tools they need for academic success. Families with children in K-12 spent a projected $519 per child on back-to-school needs last year. For families in low-income neighborhoods, the costs are simply not realistic. Donating new school supplies to children in disadvantaged communities will make an impact on their ability to begin the school year school-ready. In a world where access to technology is synonymous with access to opportunity, its been great to find ourselves in a position where we’ve been able to donate a number of unused laptops to a local school, which will help young children within our community increase access to education. Why am I raising money to donate books? Imagine a world where your zip code determines your access to stories, knowledge, and dreams. A staggering 82% of CPS elementary schools lack a functioning library, a basic necessity we often take for granted. The disparity grows as we learn that libraries exist in only 10% of primarily Black schools and 21% in Latinx schools. Now, picture a child's home. In 61% of low-income families, not a single age-appropriate book graces their shelves. Yet, studies show that children growing up in homes with at least twenty books gain an additional three years of schooling compared to their peers from bookless environments. When you’re running a school, it can be very hard to ask tuition-paying parents for donations. But the fact remains: tuition doesn’t fully cover your school's costs. Your school wants to give their students your absolute best experience of learning and skill building, but you feel limited when it comes to funding. So, what can you do instead of turning to the parents with a direct ask for money?? You can invite them to an event where you, the executive director, will present where the school is at, and what funding is needed to get to where you want to be. Full transparency. You’ll share the exact opportunity (exact dollar amount included). And then start having parents and students (even alumni) take on personal fundraising goals. When parents know why the money is needed and where the money will go, they will be more inclined to reach out to their networks and raise as much as they can. Our collective efforts will help create a special Back to School bash on July 20th, where all collected supplies will be distributed at Tanger Outlets to the students in need. How You Can Help: 1. Drop Off School Supplies - Participating Stores: Look for stores with a Supply Drive decal on their doors.
