The UK Government has missed its target to reduce the number of autistic individuals detained in mental health hospitals, highlighting a significant human rights issue. Despite a pledge to halve these numbers by March 2024, only a 30% reduction has been achieved. The National Autistic Society stresses the need for urgent mental health law reforms and increased funding for community services. At Carter Brown, we stand behind the Change The Conversation campaign, supporting efforts to empower autistic people and advocate for necessary reforms. Together, we can work towards a system that truly meets their needs. https://lnkd.in/evfRDUkp #PTSDAwarenessDay #MentalHealth #AutismSupport #ChangeTheConversation #CarterBrown

Yesterday The Times reported that ‘2,045 people with autism and learning disabilities, including 205 children, were held in inpatient mental health hospitals in England’ as little as two months ago: https://lnkd.in/d8knWNtq In our recent response to the UK government consultation on the draft Mental Health Bill, we called for and end to inappropriate detention for disabled people, and those with autism. Read our blog, published on World Mental Health day to find out more: https://lnkd.in/eCXyBzjJ As Britain’s equality and human rights regulator, we welcomed the draft Mental Health Bill, and urge the UK government to bring the bill before Parliament as an urgent priority.

Well said. Let's take better care of our young people. There still lies much stigma and under-valuing of mental health supports. while in actuality, we know if we invest in earlier intervention we can prevent suffering of our young people. Long-term it would also be incredibly cost effective for our government budgets as it naturally reduces mental health related admissions to hospital and likely reduce the numbers of young people who require a specialist Multidisciplinary Team. #youngpeoplematter #mentalthealth #integrativehealth

Experiencing life-changing events often sparks a journey of #advocacy, leading individuals to step far beyond their comfort zones. For Lisa M. MEd, CAS, this journey began with the tragic loss of her husband to suicide after 29.8 years of marriage. Suddenly, she found herself propelled into advocating for #CrisisSupport and #SuicidePrevention tailored to #autistic individuals. Through her advocacy efforts, Lisa has encountered both moments of triumph and challenges. While it's incredibly gratifying to educate professionals on supporting autistic individuals in crisis, there have been instances where unintentional harm has surfaced. It's crucial to emphasize the unintentional nature of this harm, stemming from a lack of understanding that #AutisticAdvocates, like Lisa, are also autistic individuals. Their advocacy stems from personal experiences and pertains to their own #community. Yet, in advocating for crisis support, Lisa has encountered skepticism about her competence during moments of heightened #anxiety or difficulty in #communication. Moreover, there's often a mismatch in expectations rooted in differing #cultural norms. Within the #autism culture, competence allows space for #RegulatingEmotions and #sensory stimuli, as Lisa experienced firsthand at an autistic-led conference. Here, individuals supported each other's needs without judgment or expectation of constant composure. 🤝 Advocating for autistic individuals should inherently involve understanding and #accommodating their unique perspectives and needs. It's not just about advocating for them but also with them. By practicing #CulturalCompetency and embracing discomfort, professionals can create environments where autistic advocates thrive, ultimately benefiting the entire community. The scars on my leg and psyche tell the story of a failed medical model for disabled people. For most of my life, like many other disabled people, I have been fighting to get appropriate healthcare. I went through 18 operations before my 17th birthday, to which I consented to none. I’m here to change the way we think about healthcare for disabled people. That’s why I just launched Kultivate. Kultivate’s purpose is to provide wellbeing, equity and inclusion support and education that is lived-experience based and rooted in disability justice and an anti-oppression approach. Working alongside fellow disabled adults on their mental health and overall wellbeing is a privilege and my passion. My hope is that Kultivate will become the place any person who wants to Kultivate wellbeing, inclusion, and equity can go to. Kultivate will be the place where disabled people are safe because their voices, goals, and needs are our top priority. At Kultivate we now offer Psychological Therapy, Peer support and Education group, Online educational webinars, workshops, lectures & more. Late last month, the DC Council’s Committee on Health held two performance oversight hearings for the Department of Behavioral Health (DBH). DRDC testified on three key issues with DBH’s performance, including its lack of public communication on changes to its fee-for-service Mental Health Rehabilitation Services, its insufficient discharge planning for individuals in Institutions for Mental Disease, and abuse, neglect, and poor oversight at the Psychiatric Institute of Washington. Why choose a social worker-led psychosocial functional capacity assessment? When someone has a psychosocial disability, inherent social factors are impacting their mental health condition. Social workers are trained to identify these factors while considering each individual's unique circumstances and range of needs. Social workers are also more able to meet people in their current circumstances, whether that's experiencing homelessness, the justice or child protection system, or experiencing substance use. A psychosocial functional capacity assessment (FCA) assesses how an individual's day-to-day functioning is impacted by their disability and how this interacts against their environment. Our report explains an individual’s functional capacity to the NDIA to apply for the appropriate level of funding and supports to enable more independence and well-being. If you'd like to refer to our trauma-informed, strengths-based psychosocial FCAs, head to our website. Linked below!
