Yesterday I had a great chat with Kris Lyons about the joy of stadiums, comparing places we had been too or played in during our sporting careers. For me, this was my pinnacle, yes I played in front of larger crowds or in bigger stadiums with American Football (shoutout to Worcesters Sixways Stadium) but this was the one that had that impact. Brackley Town FC's St James Park. We got brought in under the Brackley Town umbrella as the 2nd U17s side and that meant we got to play on the pitch most home games. In my head, the pitch was always glass smooth, massive and the stands packed. This wasn’t the case obviously but to most of us, that would be the closest we got to playing in anything resembling a stadium for any of our careers. We knew our way round like the back of our hand, which parts of the pitch were best for our style of play, which part of the the tunnel to touch on our way out before kick off. It was our Home Ground. And for opposition players however, it was their Wembley. Most would never get to play in a ground again so it made it more special when they played us. It would cause some to up their game but for most, you could see them get a bit struck by it, by the simple fact of having changing rooms lead to a tunnel, that lead out through a stand, to a pitch fully enclosed on all 4 sides. It was special and it was different and it was for some, overwhelming. Often times you would see them milling in the car park not sure where to go until on of the players asked a passing Brackley player, “Mate, where are the changing rooms?”. And whilst I was having this conversation with Kris I realised theres a comparison here with what I currently do. Playermaker is my home ground. I know the ins and the outs, the secret corridors, the niche parts, where the pitch might have grass a bit longer than the rest so you have to play the bounce differently. For my customers who I am trying to engage with, this is their Wembley. Theres so much to take in, so many factors, so many different parts of what we do that can help clubs. In my passion for it, I can sometimes over provide and give too much, when in fact I should start with the basics, the discovery, the why they should talk to me and get that first entry point. So from now on, I am going to focus as if I’m back in the car park on a Sunday morning. A gangly 6ft5 striker with a ratty beard, kit bag on my shoulder, off to miss 9/10 chances I get in the coming game and I come across todays opposition in the car park. Let’s Go Fightins. The Phillies Double-A affiliate is in the midst of a $45 million renovation of their ballpark, FirstEnergy Stadium. The project includes a unique take on traditional baseball seating and party areas. Construction of a new event center just beyond the outfield fence will be the centerpiece of the project. In addition to creating group ticketing space for Fightin’s games, it will be open year-round for all types of meetings and events such as trade shows and weddings. This novel approach to generating revenue year-round from what used to be a seasonal business is what all sports franchises are looking to maximize in today’s sports and entertainment space. Some venues already rent out space in their existing buildings, but constructing these dedicated structures and then incorporating them into the overall game viewing experience is a trend I believe we will see more and more moving forward.  https://lnkd.in/e_Qv9BgS
