I’m excited to be headed to #davos today for the World Economic Forum’s 2024 Annual Meeting, to build on the momentum of our Global Refugee Forum in December where #privatesector sector demonstrated strong support for #refugees. We want to build on this momentum to continue advocating for and explore new #partnerships in support of the refugee cause. UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency’s presence will also help ensure the voice of forcibly displaced people is heard and their needs fully taken into account during discussions.   🤝 Global challenges require global efforts. With more than 114 million people displaced by war and violence last year and that number expected to rise, we have a responsibility to work together – with refugees - to find solutions and address the challenges refugees face. 🌍 NFTs: A Tool for Social Good and Impact 🌍 It's tough to watch the news these days. We are living in a world marked by an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. The number of refugees and people forcibly displaced is growing exponentially. 🌅 New Era of Philanthropy The creative use of blockchain and digital assets (NFTs) is emerging as a beacon of hope. What exactly are NFTs, and how can they drive social change?  NFTs, short for non-fungible tokens, are digital assets that exist on a blockchain, representing ownership of unique items, and cannot be replicated. It's this feature that organizations like the UN Refugee agencies are starting to creatively leverage for social good. 🌟 The Untapped Potential of NFTs Engaging Tech-Savvy and Socially Conscious Audiences: NFTs open up the field to a whole new generation of patrons, separate from the traditional donor classes we know. They resonate with a generation that values digital innovation and projects infused with social consciousness. Connecting People and Causes -- NFTs bring connectivity: As data-driven networked art, they operate as social graphs, connecting donors, beneficiaries, and their stories. The art follows these relationships as they evolve over time. Building Long-Term Relationships vs. One-Off Donations: NFTs offer a new model for sustained support, rather than sporadic giving. A donation is transformed into patronage as artworks are embedded in collections, digital identities, social signaling, and more. Transparent and Traceable Fundraising: NFT transactions are recorded on the blockchain, providing transparency on where the funds are going. Donors can trace how their contributions are used, creating a powerful living trust relationship. Decentralised giving: These projects can pave the way towards an opening of the giving process, where donors engage directly with the causes and beneficiaries that mean the most to them. It’s just the beginning. 🐐 Innovation in Action: The Goat Tribe Project One of Switzerland for UNHCR's 2023 experiments — “Kind Hoofs” in partnership with the #GOAT Tribe — is a groundbreaking example. The project was a test case for the UN, leveraging NFTs not just as digital collectibles, but as tools for tangible impact. The collection, which sold out quickly, transformed into a social graph connecting the Goat Tribe community, the donor-collectors, and the forcibly displaced. All sales were donated to the UNHCR, in support of operations in the field. Each output was unique yet forever part of a newly formed network of “Kind Hoofs”. 🔗 Let’s Learn & Experiment At the crossroads of technology and humanitarianism, we can embrace these new tools and tap into their potential.
