The second annual Central Texas Affordability Summit was recently held by Amplify Credit Union on May 23. The event brought together Amplify members, Mayor Kirk Watson, and a panel consisting of Heather Donahue from MOD Architecture and Design, Jeremy Striffler from Austin ISD, and Hannah Rangel from the Downtown Austin Alliance.
The summit aimed to address the issue of housing affordability in the area and explore innovative solutions, such as revising development codes and promoting local workforce growth.

New York is actually facing two housing crises: affordability and accessibility. In rural communities we need to preserve the aging housing stock, both owner-occupied and rental, while also building new housing that is suitable in size for less densely populated areas. In this interview on Spectrum, RHC Executive Director Mike Borges explains why rural New York communities need targeted support to build and preserve affordable housing. https://lnkd.in/g2Bq5c5s

Several KEY takeaways:
1. Partnership stands as the cornerstone of successful PPP ventures.
2. Focus on identifying your partners' capacities while building on your own strengths.
3. Cultivate unwavering trust within the partnership.
4. Maintain steadfast commitment. (Fidelity)
5. Be highly flexible.
6. Lack of incentives does not constitute a true partnership.
7. There is no Panacea for money and it is not free.

We'd like to extend our immense appreciation to D Magazine's Matt Goodman for highlighting Dallas' growing need for public investments in affordable housing. His newest article gives a great overview of what Dallas needs to succeed, our mission here at DHC, and what the future could look like if we don't make the necessary investments in housing. It was good to get the opportunity to share some thoughts with the Minister last week.
One of the interesting things the group discussed was about how we can not only enable (through zoning), but also encourage/expedite/scale infill and higher density development around transport nodes. It could appear that the direction to enable more Greenfields development means that the govt don't want brownfields infill development, but that did not appear to be the case! We discussed how to make higher density infill more desirable and feasible so that we can get more activated, compact, amenity rich neighbourhoods, which have a range of housing options, in the areas that people want and need to live. Things raised, among others, included value capture methods, the potential of development corporations to attract inward investment and the use of leasehold arrangements. The reality is that many different things need to come together to make these larger scale precinct style developments come to life, and it was heartening to hear that the government was all ears open. We have written more about this topic in previous study tour reports, which can be found on the knowledge hub at www.theurbanadvisory.com.

My public comment to the 'ACT GREATER HARTFORD' - A Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy for Growth and Equity in the Capitol Region is below*.
Every five years, the Capitol Region Council of Governments (CRCOG) is required to prepare and update its Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) Plan. The CEDS is a five-year strategy that identifies goals, projects, and strategies to help advance economic growth for the Capitol Region. The U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) is funding the project. The final plan must meet the EDA's requirements for an EDA-funded CEDS.
My public comment* to CEDS 2024-2029 states the importance of including Hartford-Brainard Airport in the CEDS Plan. I substantiate the immense impact of Brainard Airport on the Capitol regional and state economy. Many large and smaller businesses that use Brainard Airport employ residents in the regional towns of Wethersfield, West Hartford, Hartford, and more.

Great article, Dinah Bornat, on including young people more in built environment planning & policy, in Building Design.
Will await the outcome of your evidence, with Jo McCafferty, Jonny Anstead, Sarah Scannell MRTPI, and Tim Gill to the U.K. House of Commons Select Committee, looking into the work of the Department for Levelling Up Housing and Communities (DLUHC). Lessons for all regions needed on “what role the Government may have in making the built environment work in the best way possible,” focusing on enhancing the health and well-being of children & young people.
