There's no cure for dementia, but meaningful music can help. Hearing a song that is familiar or brings back happy memories can help a person feel safe and relaxed. This in turn can give a carer a moment for respite. And it can help everyone who listens together to connect and spark conversation with each other. Have you ever experienced a visit with someone who has dementia, where only songs were used to communicate? Although it may make you feel uncomfortable, for the person with dementia, it is a calming experience. In such situations, there is no need to figure out or pressure the person to respond. Just enjoy the shared comfort and joy! If you are a therapist or nurse, instead of speaking lots of words to someone with cortical dementia, try singing first. Keep singing and then demonstrate what you want your patient to do. You can even work on balance or insert an IV while you or someone else sings! If you are a CNA, sing first, and then help take their clothes off. Singing a song first can help build rapport and indicate that no harm is intended.
