Giving back doesn't come easy. Hospital systems that lack psychological safety can prevent us from doing the right thing for care teams and patients. When a hospital is led by a CEO and executive team that lacks empathy and compassion, few win. When we are silenced, shunned, and mocked for doing the right thing, we exist in survival mode, at best. The flying monkeys and sycophants band together to destroy and break our will, preventing us from making a difference. Pursuing an independent practice or business gives us the freedom to shine. Autonomy is a beautiful thing. Healthcare with a heart gives back. ❤️ #compassion #empathy #leadership #rolemodels #healthcareonlinkedin

The only change I would have humbly suggested to Ms Hepburn about this truth filled statement is to change empathy to compassion— the acts that grow out of feeling empathy for others. As the years fly by in my career, I have come to believe that the health care system is a microcosm of the human experience and presents us with the opportunity to face, address and acknowledge our collective contemporary societal challenges and strengths. We spend a necessary but disproportionate amount of time wrestling with the challenges. The magic of our strengths are like the unsung hero who show up everyday and hold us together, inspire us and feed our desire to come back another day. The feeling of empathy and the acts of compassion take us out of ourselves and into serving the collective good—a sacred fuel that’s needed to stabilize our sense of a healthy and kind community, inside the healthcare system and in our global community. How do you show compassion? How do you acknowledge it when you see it? What prevents you from acting with compassion? What compassionate acts have you received from others?
