Two Things That Have Zero Similarities, Or Do They? USA Water Policy and Personal Network Communication Plan Object 1: Water is the lifeblood of every human. Object 2: Your network equals your net worth. These two topics appear completely unrelated, but let's see if I can tie them together and give you something valuable to take away. Object 1: Water Policy in the United States The United States has no national water policy. It sounds insane, but water rights, drilling depths, and access regulations are all managed mainly at the municipal level and state level. Water is incredibly important—how has no government leader or organization recognized the need for a national water policy? Here's a crazy story: A farmer in the Midwest was told by the city that he was using too much water and couldn't pump water for his crops. An investigative reporter discovered that just 40 miles away, a huge corporate farm owned by a foreign country was drilling 1500 feet below ground and extracting vast amounts of water. City, farmer, and corporate farm all needed water, yet there was no overarching policy to manage this vital resource effectively. Object 2: Personal Network Communication Plan If you're a LinkedIn user and reading this, it's fair to say that you value your network. Like me, you probably understand that networking is crucial for learning, career opportunities, selling services, and staying connected. So why don't we have a personal network communication plan (policy)? I'm guilty of reaching out, connecting, updating, and checking in based on my own timeframe and needs. But how are these two critical areas left without a strategic approach? Connecting the Dots Someone smarter than me will have to figure out the national water policy. But as for a personal network communication plan, I'm going to make the effort to create one. Here's my plan after downloading my network into a spreadsheet: - Yearly Touchpoints: Reach out to everyone in your network at least once a year. - Quarterly Outreach: Connect with key contacts quarterly to maintain relationships. - Monthly Updates: Share updates and insights with your network monthly. - Weekly Messages: Engage with a few contacts weekly to stay top of mind. I'll keep a column for notes from replies and learnings to better understand where we can support each other and keep my network current. Does this make sense? Glad to hear your plan of organizing and staying connected to your network. #mitchellmartin #networking #hiring #jobs #technology #AI
