"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." -- Martin Luther King, Jr. Today the U.S. celebrates and remembers the day the last slaves were set free-- nearly 2 and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, nearly 2 months after the Civil War ended, and almost a month after the Confederate military was disbanded in Texas. There were still people living and working in slavery for that long after they were technically freed, on paper. Leaders need to be committed to doing better in all aspects of their work, to work toward ethical practices and outcomes, and strive for justice within their realm of power. They also need to have a sense within themselves about the quote above from MLK, and to know that the work for justice is never finished. They also need to recognize and celebrate the wins, but also be sure not to center themselves when it's not about them. How you recognize and celebrate today depends on how much this holiday affects and is meant for you. Happy Juneteenth! Celebrate today, and get back to work making it better, tomorrow. If you feel led to give today, the African American Advisory Alliance was established in the midst of the racial unrest in 2020 in conversation with the City of Pomona, and "set the aim towards efforts of reconciliation and equity in our community." Did you know this Monday is the actual birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.?! (1/15/29) Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is observed every year on the third Monday of January. King was an influential civil rights leader — best known for his work on racial equality and ending racial segregation in the United States. We celebrate his life and achievements and reflect on the work that still needs to be done for racial equality. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a federal holiday that encourages Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. In 1994, Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act, making Martin Luther King Jr. Day the only federal holiday dedicated to volunteerism. Since 1970, VCS has pioneered the innovative use of community lay people to do high-level counseling for clients with a wide range of social problems. Current OPPORTUNTY: VCS Volunteer Counselor Training is for people who are interested in becoming a volunteer VCS counselor. You need not have prior experience or qualification in counseling; just an interest in counseling, an ability to listen to people, and some life experience. https://lnkd.in/g-NKWUeV PLEASE NOTE VCS IS CLOSED MONDAY JANUARY 15, 2024 IN OBSERVATION. #Equality #Peace #MLKJrDay

On #MLK Day, we're reminded of how Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., leader of the civil rights movement, played a pivotal role in advancing racial equality in America. Today, racial justice and equity organizations continue this crucial work and remain on the frontlines to achieve and sustain an equitable future. In July 2020, in response to the heightened visibility of racial injustice, MacKenzie Scott gifted $587 million to racial justice and equity organizations, 91% of which were run by leaders of color. Through Panorama's peer learning community, 13 U.S.-based racial justice and equity organizations met to build community through dialogue and learn from one another’s experience as they managed the influx of funding to advance racial justice and equity. Read what these nonprofit leaders recommend for shifting funding practices toward #equity and how to encourage funders to drive transformative change for #RacialJustice. https://bit.ly/3TYU1Oz

Wall Street's Best Connected Legal Executive Recruiter ~ Retained Search for Impactful Law Department Leaders ~ dmastrocola@mlaglobal.com
On Monday in the U.S., we celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, honoring his legacy as a vital civil rights leader. Dr. King famously said, "Life's most persistent question is: What are you doing for others?" MLK Day is a National Day of Service, encouraging us to carry forth his dream by making a positive impact in our communities. Some ideas: • Engage with your local community organizations and create constructive action around causes you care about. • Reach out to mentor a young person and help guide the next generation of leaders. • Volunteer at a food bank or shelter to help those struggling with housing and food insecurity. • Organize or join neighborhood cleanup efforts at public parks and recreation spaces. • Provide pro bono or low-cost legal services to those who need them. • Share your knowledge and skills by giving free talks at law schools, bar associations, community centers, or high schools. Every contribution counts, big or small. Let's honor Dr. King's spirit by serving others with purpose. #MLKDay #Service #Community #Equality #Justice

This #MLKDay weekend, we encourage everyone to learn more about Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King. 📚 Go beyond the short quotes politicians and corporations post year after year. Read the Kings' interviews, sermons, and speeches to better understand the complete context. Challenge yourself to genuinely understand how they viewed critical issues like poverty and wars. 💡 Today, there are several ongoing humanitarian catastrophes around the world. What might they think about the origins of those conflicts and disasters? How would they suggest approaching solutions? ✨ We are fortunate that The King Center has continued to uplift Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King's legacies so that we can all continue to learn from their teachings on non-violence and vision for a more equitable society. 💗 Below, we have shared a quote from #MLK's 1964 #NobelPrize lecture titled "The Quest for Peace and Justice." We believe this lecture is poignant, and this section is timely: "Violence is impractical because it is a descending spiral ending in destruction for all. It is immoral because it seeks to humiliate the opponent rather than win his understanding: it seeks to annihilate rather than convert. Violence is immoral because it thrives on hatred rather than love. It destroys community and makes brotherhood impossible. It leaves society in monologue rather than dialogue. Violence ends up defeating itself. It creates bitterness in the survivors and brutality in the destroyers." #MLK #MartinLutherKingJr #CorettaScottKing #BelovedCommunity #BeLove #MLKDay2024 #CivilRights #HumanRights #War #Peace

Today marks the anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. On this day in 1968, we reflect on his legacy and the progress made towards equality, diversity, inclusion, and belonging. However, there are still tremendous setbacks and much work to be done, especially for minorities and minority businesses.
