Attributes necessary for success as a leader in Senior Living. Part 1 By: Stephen Deraney, PhD Everyone has their opinion about what constitutes a successful leader in senior living and I want to share my point of view as well. These are in no particular order but are all important if you want to be successful. I will start with patience. So many problems can arise out of the blue with residents, staff, dining, maintenance and others. If you are not patient then the stress can be overwhelming. Next we have to be a problem solver. With everyday new challenges arise and a successful leader must be quick on their feet evaluating the facts and make decisions that may affect the whole community. Next, I would suggest a positive attitude. We as leaders can impact the community demeanor with our words or actions. Starting everyday with a smile and warm greetings and keep staff, family and resident attitudes at a constant level of calm. Lastly today, faith and success are integral to being a successful leader. If we just start with faith and maintain these other attributes, you can work through most issues and find enjoyment in your career. I shouldn't say this, but...... when I see a leadership panel comprised of only middle-aged white people .............. I can't help but feel really disappointed and frustrated. We do have diversity in healthcare! If you are the organiser of a healthcare event and every speaker is white and middle aged, please pause and then cast the net a little bit wider. In order for digital health initiatives to be successful in hospitals, there needs to be strong synergies between IT teams and innovation teams.
