I always liked to think I was nonjudgemental, curious and open-minded about homelessness, but then a couple of years ago I began working closely with the amazing Your Place (formerly Caritas Anchor House). It wasn't until then that I really understood the complexity of the issue. Sure, I'd spoken to quite a few people, mainly here in Brighton, who were experiencing homelessness. But every person is different. Every person's circumstances are distinct. And the crises and issues affecting many people without a home are not always visible at street level. What's common across all of their situations is abject inequality, a discriminatory and dehumanising system, and the breakdown of community and health services. Through that immersive work with Your Place, what I experienced as a uniquely person-centred community (not a handout, leg-up or even a "lifestyle choice"), I got to reflect on and recognise the nature of my unconscious bias around what is a deeply stigmatised systemic social problem. And the home secretary's dangerous viewpoint is a big part of that problem. (Whether or not it was a tactical provocation and political manoeuvre on her part...) It's the wider ideology of our society — and its cultivation of an individualistic, self-serving mindset — that is hopeless, not people who're homeless. #oneperson #homelessness #housingcrisis #housingreform #socialreform
Over the weekend the Home Secretary said that homelessness is a “lifestyle choice”, and we couldn’t disagree more. We joined 14 other charities to tell the Home Secretary why her stance was so misguided and concerning, and how what’s needed is empathy, compassion and a commitment to providing meaningful support for those who find themselves without a home. All policy should be made through a childhood lens.
When we invest in children, we all win💚 That was the message, loud and clear, from the UK’s five largest children’s charities at last month’s political party conferences. Together as a coalition, we hosted panels, briefings and events to ensure that our political leaders prioritise the needs of babies, children and young people. We’re calling for change - so children growing up in the UK are happier, safer and they each have the chance to reach their potential. After I packed my kid off to school in pyjamas for 'Pudsby Day' (please no one correct her!) I sat down to put together a list of children and family charities near us to decide after school who to donate to. You see her school don't do collections at school, because it creates pressure on kids who may not be able to. One of the many reasons I love the place. But they don't stop there. This is the message we received: "We would ask you to support something you feel is deserving. Look locally, nationally and abroad and support in any way you can. This then becomes an area or cause you as a family care about. Sadly, there are all too many examples of children in need." I love this even more. Because it encouarges families to think more deeply about children 'in need' and create more of a connection, and take action that works for them. This directly addresses some of the things that are problematic about Children in Need. This thread from Cathy Reay sets it out so clearly. https://lnkd.in/eKVdvvBN In short - Children in Need has a massive platform but doesn't use it to influence for change in the systems that are creating this 'need'. The way it uses stories is exploitative of the people it sets out to support. It doesn't genuinely connect donors with the work to create lasting relationships. And the funding model prevents charities working in the ways they know are needed. I mean, they're not alone. There is so much need for change in our sector, and they are just one organsiation. But they are one with an ENORMOUS platform they could use to lead the way. And the irony is, so many charities they fund have changed the way they work and the way they talk about their work - empowering, walking alongside, and most importantly fighting for change in the systems that lead to 29% of children in our country living in poverty. But too many of our funders haven't got the message, and aren't empowering us to do the work. And we need them to start listening, and working with us to drive the changes our society needs.

As we head into the next general election, this event will help charities and funders to better understand current Conservative views on civil society, and what it means for them. We will be joined by Samuel Kasumu, former Special Adviser to the Prime Minister on Civil Society and Communities, and Jo Gideon MP to discuss: What differing approaches to the role of civil society are there in the Conservative Party? What might these differing approaches mean for civil society? How can the sector best influence the Conservative party in the run-up to, and following, the general election? https://lnkd.in/etFybKQ3

#donoradvisedfunds funds (#DAFs) and the East Bay Community Foundation mission-based funds are a great way to give to your local community. Consider making an online cash gift if you want it to count towards possible 2023 tax deduction. Otherwise, consider your philanthropy budget for 2024 and start preparing in January - that way you can fund your favorite cause areas in a steady manner throughout 2024 without having to wait until year-end. A #philanthropy budget is a great way to stay on target with your mission-based interests & cause areas versus responding to “asks” throughout the year and realizing you might have budget shortfall for areas you personally care about. #donoradvisedfunds #donors #taxdeductions #missiondriven
There's just a few days left in 2023 to make your tax-deductible donations to help create a sense of home and belonging for all East Bay residents. More than just four walls, home also means having family-sustaining jobs, healthy neighborhoods, nourishing arts and culture, equitable public services, and responsive local government. Join us and donate to create an East Bay where everyone can dream, heal, and belong. https://lnkd.in/eikf3z_w
