As I start my last week at St Mungo's it feels like a good time to reflect on the last few years. This week we published the Kerslake report, with the commission saying that the Government would not meet its target to end rough sleeping by 2024. And, in fact, our teams on the front line are seeing more and more people forced into homelessness and rough sleeping as the cost of living crisis takes hold and the chronic shortage in genuinely affordable housing continues. This feels particularly heartbreaking after seeing first hand the incredible progress made over COVID, when good quality accommodation was made available to EVERYONE, with support services able to come to the clients and decent funding from the Government. Seeing how hard our teams worked to keep everyone safe was humbling - people worked themselves to the ground, but did it because finally progress was being made and the numbers of people rough sleeping were the smallest they'd been in years. This can't be wasted. The Government needs to take notice of the Kerslake report. Housing benefits need to cover the bottom 30% of rents. Funding for homelessness services needs to be long-term, not just sporadic pots of money. Working at St Mungo's I have met so, so many amazing people. People who work all hours to support people away from homelessness. But without the Government making these changes we will only continue to see these numbers rise.
An impactful, adaptive and engaging senior leader in the communications industry with a passion for roles in the third sector.
Really pleased to have got such great media attention for the launch of the new Kerslake Commission report into the rise of rough sleeping and homelessness. A vital document which demonstrates the Government will not meet their target of ending rough sleeping by 2024, as promised. Great to have St Mungo's CEO be able to talk in-depth about the chronic and systemic issues with housing to Sky and World at One and to have C5 go to our amazing service in Oxford, which is at the sharp end of helping those in desperate need. Non-Executive Board Director | Transformation Leader | Corporate Social Responsibility Advisor | Collaboration & Collective Impact specialist | Youth Advocate
Did you know that over 38,000 young people aged 15–24 years presented alone to a homelessness service in 2022–23? Of these young people, almost half experienced mental ill-health, and over one-third experienced domestic and family violence. Most of these young people needed short- or long-term accommodation, and most were turned away due to a lack of capacity. These statistics only scratch the surface of issues that young people experiencing homelessness face. To have statistics like this in a country like Australia is not acceptable; together, we can have a tangible impact, and now is the time to act. #wehavetodobetter #YHMD

You can start to make a difference today. Educate yourself on the issues and share what you’ve learned with your friends and family. Understand that people don’t choose to be homeless. Circumstances beyond their control, for a variety of reasons, have brought them to this way of life. If you’re comfortable, smile and say hi to the homeless person you often see on the corner, or on your way to work. Make eye contact if you can and say a few words to acknowledge and reaffirm their humanity. Most importantly, we can make a difference together. Please give the largest and most meaningful gift you can that reflects your values and your desire to join CUCS as part of the solution to homelessness. cucs.org/donate. #cucsnyc #homelessnyc #supportivehousing #makeadifferencedecember #transitionalhousing

Streamlining Your Workplace Supplies: Workwear & PPE, Furniture, Janitorial, Office Products and Bespoke Print
Personal post alert... and it is a bit hard hitting ❓ Did you know that the average age of death for people experiencing homelessness is 46 for men and 42 for women... ❔ Homeless people are over nine times more likely to take their own life than the general population. ❓ People sleeping on the street are almost 17 times more likely to have been victims of violence. More than one in three people sleeping rough have been deliberately hit or kicked or experienced some other form of violence whilst homeless. People have even been set on FIRE. ❔ The statistics show that one third of care leavers become homeless in the first two years immediately after they leave care and 25% of homeless people have been in care at some point in their lives. I am not only a care leaver, but have personally been homeless and at risk of homelessness many times in my younger years – so raising money for this great cause is also somewhat personal. All donations are so very much appreciated, and I am looking forward to seeing just how much I (we) can raise this year! 🙏

Our friends @Justlife carried out research into women’s experiences of homelessness in Brighton & Hove. It’s a story of domestic violence, unhealthy relationships, complex feelings around motherhood and lack of basic safety while in temporary accommodation. We’re fundraising this week to create a year-long programme of free dance classes with and for women who have experienced homelessness. Everything you donate before midday on Tuesday 26 March will be doubled by @BigGive here: https://lnkd.in/e5jSDYD3 Thankyou 🙏 #ArtsForImpact #homelessness #danceforwellbeing #womeninrecovery #fundraising #Brighton&Hove Video description: A video showing roads, streets and cars with text about three things you might not know about temporary accommodation: - it's often not temporary. The shortage in social housing means people can wait years for their own home - living conditions can be poor. Common complaints include damp, overcrowding, infestations and feeling unsafe - people in temporary accommodation are often not considered homeless because they have a roof over their heads

Be Finally Free is actively combating the homeless epidemic in Kern County through education. Our guiding principle is encapsulated in a simple question: "How can you do something different if you don't know anything different?" This question underscores our mission to instill a new mindset in individuals. Our programs are dedicated to teaching alternative ways to respond, think, and navigate life's challenges beyond familiar patterns. By educating the homeless community, we are making a tangible impact on our local society. However, we cannot achieve this without support from individuals like you.
