The private sector must play a crucial role in limiting global warming by investing in deep emissions cuts and large-scale carbon removal. However, inconsistent quality standards in carbon credits have hindered private sector participation in voluntary carbon markets. Recently, the US federal government announced the Voluntary Carbon Markets Joint Policy Statement and Principles, aiming to improve credit quality and market integrity. These principles set standards for developers and certifiers, ensuring science-based climate outcomes and encouraging private sector involvement. Carbon capture and storage technologies are essential tools to cut carbon pollution and address climate change. CATF’s Benjamin Longstreth highlights how countries can take advantage of this critical climate technology – through policy mechanisms and investment. At #COP28, CATF hosted and participated in a number of panels on best practices for carbon capture deployment – including how it can help decarbonize hard-to-electrify sectors like heavy industry. https://lnkd.in/gBYBA3iS

At a time of profound division over the use of #CarbonOffsets to meet corporate climate targets, the voluntary carbon market (#VCM) just received a strong endorsement from the US government. The Biden-Harris Administration today released a statement of policy stating that VCMs “can and should play a meaningful role” in helping the world limit global warming to 1.5ºC – and provided guidelines for the use of carbon credits by both companies and government agencies. The principles draw from other carbon market integrity guidelines from the The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) and VCMI – and the latter has welcomed the "clear direction" provided by the US. https://lnkd.in/esq8vG-c #CarbonCredits #CarbonMarket #CarbonNeutrality #NetZero #ChiefSustainabilityOfficer

A carbon emissions market is necessary but insufficient to reach climate targets. "Our recent research shows that global carbon pricing policies must advance much more rapidly, and be combined with other mitigation measures, to avoid harmful warming scenarios," write Sean Cleary, Chair of Institute for Sustainable Finance and Smith PHD student Neal Willcott. Could Carbon Removal Help Us in the Fight Against Climate Change? "The market for carbon credits, often generated through reforestation projects, has come under scrutiny. One of the critical issues is the lack of stringent controls over how long the trees must be maintained without being cut down or burned. This lack of regulation raises questions about the actual environmental benefits of some reforestation projects, as the permanence of carbon sequestration cannot be guaranteed." How can we incorporate more robust oversight of #carbon credits? https://lnkd.in/emd5xsE4
