With the rise of #biofuel development, how can we know which ones will win out in the long run? From biomethanol's emergence in marine fuels to the allure of green ammonia, a 100% carbon-free alternative, and the critical considerations shaping their viability. Learn more in our latest blog.
The race to decarbonization continues to ramp up, and the pace is only set to increase in the coming months. Accordingly, businesses from all industries are aggressively seeking out the best possible options to lower their carbon footprint and save on total emissions. Case-in-point: #methanol and #ammonia. Biomethanol has become a serious contender as a renewable alternative in the #marinefuels market. But #greenammonia, a 100% carbon-free option, is also making waves. While green ammonia seems like the obvious choice for improved carbon results, it's not as simple as the carbon numbers. Ammonia carries with it a high cost for production and usage. With the potential infrastructure investment, methanol (which already has the production capability and lower price) seems like a more prudent choice. This comparison raises an important question. In the quickening rise of #biofuel technology and development, how can we know which ones will win out in the long run? Neste pivot from fossil fuels to biofuels in 2020, driven by global sustainability goals, led to high costs and technological challenges. These issues have caused the company’s market value to plummet by over 75%. Developing biofuel technology is capital-intensive, and scaling production involves complex processing techniques. Neste's experience underscores a broader truth in the energy sector: transitioning to greener, more sustainable energy sources comes with substantial costs and challenges. The adage "there's no such thing as a green free lunch" aptly summarises this reality. While the environmental and social benefits of moving away from fossil fuels are undeniable, the economic and operational costs are significant. #Biofuels #GreenEnergy #Sustainability #EnergyTransition #MarketValue #NesteOyj

United European Car Carriers (UECC) is reaping the rewards of its pioneering investments in alternative fuels and is on track to exceed its goal of a 45% emissions reduction by 2030 after more than doubling biofuel usage across its fleet last year. The leading European sustainable shortsea carrier has made significant strides in the decarbonization of its fleet of pure car and truck carriers (PCTCs) with the addition of five LNG-fueled newbuilds and the increased rollout of biofuels in recent years – and this is now showing commercial payback for clients in the light of new green regulations, according to Energy and Sustainability Manager, Daniel Gent. The company achieved a total tank-to-wake emissions reduction of over 60,000 tonnes across its 14-vessel fleet in 2023, of which it is estimated increased biofuel use accounted for 40,000 tonnes, with the remainder coming from LNG. This was a near-250% increase on the emissions cut of 24,200 tonnes achieved in 2022. #bunkering #bunkermarket #energy #shipping #maritime #shipowners #decarbonization #energytransition #oilandgas #ports #marinefuels #uecc #unitedeuropeancarcarriers #pctc #pctcs #carcarriers #roro #biofuel #biofuelbunkering #csnl #lng #europe https://lnkd.in/dBPyxfgc
