Last week was quite a week! My personal highlight was co-hosting Akshat Rathi's new book 'Climate Capitalism - winning the global race to zero emissions' with Ari Helgason of Transition and Ellen Moeller of Watershed The book is a must read for everyone working to transform the global business and financial system to rapidly create a safe, #netzero world. #capitalism was invented by the political and wealthy elite to protect their capital and enable them to generate more. With that privilege comes a responsibility to be a steward of capital and the earth for the long term. I have long said that free markets will destroy the earth and if rely on governments to save us, we will also fail. Although we do need all the regulation we can get! So, we need another solution, which is where Akshat's book comes in. Whilst the capitalist system driven by fear and greed has created the #climatecrisis it is now playing a critical role in solving it through opportunity and its ability to deploy human, financial and technological capital at scale and speed. The book's opening line is "it is now cheaper to save the world than destroy it". Lets get on with it then! Now in week 8 at ERM I am delighted to be working with c. 8,000 talented colleagues and c.5,000 clients to drive this transformation so that the global economy operates within #planetaryboundaries by 2040. Somehow I think the next 4 weeks are going to be even more exciting and intense as we head to COP28 UAE and push harder on the transformation needed. Another episode of 'Found in Conversation' is out now! This time I explore the relationship between art, innovation, responsible investment and social change with Bettina Korek, CEO of the Serpentine and Dina De Angelo managing director in the London office of Pictet Wealth Management.  What resonated with me was their shared passion for emotional connection, recognising the importance of embracing change that happens on an individual level. A true standout to me was delving into the Serpentine's collaboration with Tomás Saraceno titled, 'Web(s) of Life.' I visited this space in the summer of 2023 alongside Pluto, my dog. I was in awe of this beautifully thought out, collaborative, living, multi-species exhibition that Tomás had created with the Serpentine. Embracing interdisciplinarity and the interconnectedness of different ecosystems, Bettina explains the importance of a more responsible and responsive approach to one's actions in relation to each other, other forms of life that we cohabitate with, and how climate change will affect our day to day lives. Dina uses the world of investment as an incredible lens for what is happening globally, exposing where world problems are but also where world advancements are happening. With innovative investments happening at the grassroots level, she articulates how the younger generations are seeking to make meaningful investments that reflect their personal interests, inspiring change. We welcome today's announcement of the Nature Markets Principles from Finance Earth, RSPB, National Trust, The Wildlife Trusts, Federated Hermes and The Woodland Trust. As the report sets out, nature markets must be defined by integrity, both in the supply and demand sides. Nature Based Solutions projects must be verifiable and transparent as well as displaying additionality. As I travel the length and breadth of the UK helping Real Wild Estates clients develop their natural capital concepts, one the most common themes of discussion is about the integrity of the projects they are developing. How can they be certain that there is confidence in what they are developing and more importantly how can they be confident that their schemes wont just end up being used as a vehicle for 'Greenwashing'. An exceptionally welcomed starting point for principles that hopefully will become the norm.
