Looking for an Accelerator? Read this. Your hope of getting funding could be ruined by an Accelerator. Worse, you might lose your startup. So before you join an Accelerator or even take on a new investor on your cap table, be sure you know what you sign up for. Read all the terms and conditions and ask yourself 10000 questions on what could go wrong. Oh yes, one more thing. There are so many things in business that we don’t know. So getting all the various types of help or advice would never be a bad thing. But if you wish to listen to just one type of advisors and bet your startup on just one type of advice, then you are just not very smart in managing risks. Be smart. The way startups are assessed at Seed is broken. Several founders fall through the cracks as their message gets lost in translation when face to face to with VCs. While many investors pretend that every business that ought to get funding gets it, the Accelerators and Pre-Seed funds exclusively working with startups raising their first Seed rounds are far less naïve. They don't trust the system to produce the correct outcomes and you can see it in their actions: - One Accelerator I interviewed arranges a three-week fundraising bootcamp for all 80 of the companies they back annually - First Round Capital, a fund with a record beating 76% graduation rate, runs a 2-6 week fundraising bootcamp and gives the advice that founders should aim for "one hour of practice for every minute of the pitch" For founder's without access to these types of elite level support - the game is pretty clearly rigged. It makes no sense for investors to pretend that the best pitches aren't often the result of great packaging combined with a great business. As someone who has spent the last 4 years as a Pre-Seed VC with a core part of my role being helping startups talk to investors.
