If this was recreated using the largest micro SDXC cards today you would need 10 stacks of paper, each as tall as Mt Everest. If you crammed micro SDXC cards into a volume the physical size of a CD-ROM you would need 10 stacks of paper each extending to the orbit of the ISS. Exponentials are amazing... Now, the question is - are we on an exponential curve with AI capability? Remember the early days of an exponential curve may be able to be measured as exponential by sensors and math, but they don't "feel" exponential to us humans. And if we are on such a curve, what does my comparison above suggest about the track of resource requirements needed to underpin/power the coming decades of growth?

CAPACITY BUILDING - THE INNOVATION KEY! As much as many believe the advent of technology si the reason for chaos in the world today, from human to climate, and all what have you, yet seeing this funny picture makes me imagine how backward (primordial) we would have remained if it weren't for technological innovations/advancements. Credits to Bill Gates for the insight he and his team had, which has become a highly invaluable value addition to life generally today... #innovationecosystem #ingenuity #technologicalinnovation #capacitybuilding #lifeimprovement

Three decades ago, the storage potential of a single CD-ROM sparked excitement. Bill Gates recently reminisced about the need for a visual demo to showcase its capabilities, igniting nostalgia for a time when physical media reigned supreme. Fast forward to today, and we're in the midst of a data storage revolution, profoundly impacting how humans store and access information. We've transitioned from CDs to cloud storage, with innovations like DVDs, SSDs, and USB drives shaping the journey. This evolution isn't just about bytes and gigabytes; it's about the human experience. CDs once cluttered shelves, representing memories and knowledge in a tangible form. Now, our data resides in the ethereal realm of the cloud, accessible with a tap or click from anywhere on the globe. Cloud computing has democratized access to information, empowering individuals, businesses, and communities to collaborate and innovate on a global scale. It's transformed industries, from education to healthcare, enabling seamless communication and collaboration across borders and time zones. Yet, as we marvel at the convenience of cloud storage, we must also consider the implications. Our reliance on digital platforms raises questions about data privacy, security, and accessibility. How do we ensure that everyone, regardless of location or socioeconomic status, can benefit from this digital revolution? Moreover, the shift to cloud storage has profound environmental implications. While it reduces the need for physical infrastructure, data centers still consume vast amounts of energy. As stewards of the planet, we must strive for sustainable solutions that balance technological advancement with ecological responsibility. Bill Gates' reflection on the CD-ROM era reminds us of how far we've come in three decades. But it also prompts us to consider the human impact of our data storage choices. As we embrace the cloud, let's ensure that it serves not just our needs today but also the needs of future generations. It's just fascinating to me to witness something revolutionary tech.

Thanks to #cloudstorage, among other advances, it's estimated that the world will store 200 zettabytes of data by 2025. In comparison, The first CD could hold about 700MB of data. It would take approximately 285.7 Trillion CDs to store 200 zettabytes of data. Just for fun, since we're talking about CDs, it would take 22.8 quadrillion songs to fill 200 zettabytes of storage. ⛅
