The streaming service Max, previously known as HBO Max, is set to launch "CNN Max" on September 27, providing 24/7 live-streaming news to U.S. viewers. This new feature will offer live content from CNN US, CNN International, and original programming. The launch aims to engage Max's audience with news programming designed for the platform, including shows like "CNN Newsroom" and "Anderson Cooper 360." This move follows the shutdown of the standalone streaming news service, CNN+, and rebrands the CNN Originals hub on Max to "CNN Max." Should the FCC redefine the VMPD definition to include the vMVDPs to the financial benefit of broadcasters? This article outlines the question (https://lnkd.in/eAA2dA-A), but let’s delve a bit into why this question matters. I started my career in broadcast, and at a high level the FCC gives broadcasters’ a license in exchange for broadcasters to serve the community with news programming. The issue is that now broadcasters want to receive retransmission payments from the vMVPs using news as the benefit. BIG reveal, news is free over the air, so regardless of what subscription a viewer has--cable, or streaming-- most CTVs have tuners to pick up over the air signals, or attaching a simple $20 digital antenna will pick up all broadcasters’ signals and viewers can watch FREE. So, how should the FCC rule? Is the access for viewers to news the most important question? OR the revenue for broadcasters? Does the tech matter, e.g. the signals are OTA (over the air already). I welcome the conversation about how streaming changed and continues to change the media world.
