'A letter to my old self' This #TYACAM we are working hard alongside many other charities to raise awareness on the specific set of challenges which this age group faces following a cancer diagnosis, both during & long after treatment. We recently asked some of the young people who attended our Residential Stay to write a letter to their 'old self'. We wanted to share some of Ben's letter, which really portrays the importance of accessing support systems like Teens Unite whilst facing these mental, social, emotional & physical challenges... "Dear old Ben, The journey your about to embark on will support you with structure & your future. Don't panic, don't worry, think of it as a roller coaster. You will board the ride & you can not get off until it ends. You can't get off, but you can scream & cry. It will come to a stop. You'll find that you're not in control of anything, whether that be emotions, feelings, structure, you will go on & just hope for the best. You'll feel like you have to remain positive but then it will all crash. You'll have built up so much pain & emotion, it will all come out eventually. Sharing your emotions will help, talking will help. You will allow yourself to understand that it's okay to not be okay. Teens Unite will open a new world for you. You'll meet like-minded people who have been on the same journey, experienced the same emotions, & gone down the same path as you have. Teens Unite will create a new community where you are part of a family, a place where nobody is judged, everyone & everything is valid. You will have the chance to ask questions, answer them, & just spend time away from 'normal life' which is what the Activity Stays offer. If I didn’t have that opportunity, I would have never realised that experiments, and analysing data, were what I truly enjoyed doing." We've been working on this one for a while and are delighted to formally announce our partnership with Alchemmy Consulting. From our initial discussions, it was immediately evident that Alchemmy wholly resonated with JAG's vision: To help improve the social mobility of young people by providing a platform where their talents can shine, regardless of their backgrounds. A Documentary! It was a privilege and an immense joy to coordinate and lead the production of the first Adewunmi Desalu Parkinson's documentary. As I have always said, you may be doing so much work, but if you are unable to tell a story of your impact in a way that people will want to hear and connect with, then you still have a long way to go. I present to you, "Beyond the Tremors: Living Well with Parkinson's Disease." This is the story of people living with Parkinson's in Lagos, Nigeria, and the role Adewunmi Desalu Parkinson's Foundation (ADPF) plays in providing care and support to them. I'll come back later to share the lessons, how-tos, and takeaways from this particular experience. But for now, watch and listen to the stories of these warriors, braving and fighting Parkinson's every day. If you know anyone who would benefit from or learn something from the documentary, please do not hesitate to share it with them. The purpose of this documentary is also to get the eyes and ears of organizations and philanthropists who can support the foundation.
