What data do we already have that can help us understand less heard voices in research and publishing? How many publications contain fabricated, falsified or plagiarised data, and how should we deal with fake studies? The latest in our Research with Integrity series sees Andrew Porter (Research Integrity and Training Adviser at CRUK MI), Catherine Winchester (Head of the Research Integrity Service at our Scotland Institute) and the wider research integrity team give us the low-down of #ResearchIntegrity from the 8th World Conf Research Integrity #WCRI2024. We rely on models to predict the future, to show us the outcomes of various scenarios. The problem is that when researchers create models, they have to set parameters. Almost immediately this introduces bias into the models. To avoid this researchers need to open the Pandora's box and share the thinking behind their models so that stakeholders can participate in the process from start to finish. Ethical modelling is key to creating inclusive and just methods that serve those the models are designed to help. Not just today, but also for future generations.
