If the mention of the word 𝐒𝐘𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐌𝐒 brings you out in a rash or makes you yawn, fear not! If it conjures up images of reams of paperwork and box-ticking bureaucracy, think again. The language of systems - ISO9001, Lean Six Sigma, standard operating procedures, process, protocol - turns an awful lot of managers away from thinking about them, let alone creating them. And it's unnecessary. I want you to change the way you view systems, to see them in a different, brighter, much friendlier light. Because the truth is, a system is just a simple logical and repeatable way of doing something, and there should be only one simple logical repeatable way to do every task... 𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐲. There's only one way to cook French fries in McDonald's and it's the right way, the McDonald's way. Everybody knows how to do it, and everyone does it this way. No exceptions. Noone would dream of doing it any other way. There's one right way to do every task in a McDonald's restaurant - it's simply the way everything gets done. It's these "systems' that give McDonald's their amazing consistency, make them so reliable, make them so scalable. "Sure... Pizza is yummy... but belly rubs... that's where it's at!" While for obvious reason's we aren't suggesting you give your team members belly rubs, and if you aren't sure why it's not appropriate please reach out to your HR team immediately, but the principle still applies. While Pizza and snacks are great treatos and make us all feel like we're "good", that feeling doesn't last. Having someone do something of value, which shows they really appreciate and care about us is what we all want. So rather than taking the easy way out and booking a night at the pub, having pizza delivered, take the time to learn from your team and see what they would like. What would make them feel appreciated. Is it more feedback, or the ability to give feedback? Do they need new equipment? More Help? Need to learn new skills? Improve their teamwork? If you can find out what they value and appreciate, you can make a meaningful impact on them. Bill Walsh inherited a 2 win team with no draft pick and turned them into 3-time Super Bowl Champions. And he did it without worrying about winning. In The Score Takes Care of Itself, Walsh talks about how he started by creating a "culture of excellence" instead. He identified behaviors, actions and routines that he expected everyone in the organization to adhere to. For example, there was no hazing of rookies. As long as you were a 49er, you were the same as everyone else and deserved to be treated as such. Perhaps my favorite example: you didn't sit on your helmets or throw them in practice. Anything that had the 49er logo on it was treated with respect. I've been thinking about this as I onboard my first team member. What is the Madison Standard? I have examples of what it means to live out our values concretely. But the Standard extends beyond that. Into the way you do the work itself. Into the (seemingly trivial) details of your day. I think Standards are a fantastic tool. Not because they improve the work directly (although they can). But because they change your mindset. They teach you and your team to start to think of the organization as elite, far before it actually is. Standards are symbols of what you aspire to be.

Last night, we picked up dinner from a restaurant. When I went in and the guy at the to-go desk saw I had a gift card, he immediately said “I don’t know how to do that. Let me go get my manager”. She immediately came, he walked away, and she got it done quickly and friendly. I bring this up to say if you want your team to grow their abilities, give them lots of reps at the everyday tasks and they will gain the experience needed to meaningfully contribute to whatever you’re working on. Hoarding knowledge and skills can only take us so far. #business #leadership #training

The best thing at conferences is meeting and learning from the broad array of individuals that work in various capacities in the restaurant industry. From vendors to other operators there is always perspective to be gained on how to do things better. I got so much of that this week at Restaurant Leadership Conference not to mention its always a great time (restaurant people in general are quite fun). The key thing now is to capture the learning and start putting it to work in the businesses to create meaningful change (otherwise it'll simply just be a good time). Key takeaways that I will be focusing on over the next quarter are the following. 1. Goal Alignment with the team is critical (knew this but always a great reminder). This includes making sure the GM/CDC's at each restaurant location clearly understand the goals and how they are doing on achieving those goals. The attainment or exceeding of these goals leads to real financial benefits for these leaders (this isn't something that can be successful done from corporate). 2. Guest feedback is critical to understanding what we are doing well and where we have opportunities for improvement. This coupled with a robust and exciting loyalty program takes guests from simply that to brand evangelists. 3. There is so much happening with technology that it's easy to get seduced and try to go all in with multiple different systems. Ensuring that the systems we have picked are meeting our needs and fully delivering on the promised outcomes before moving on to look at other options is critical. We have to get better at defining what that "fully" implemented looks like for each system and what outcomes we are hoping to drive are. Finally a general note that was a theme of many discussions over the last few days is that the industry (especially restaurant tech) would be far better served focusing on growing the total pie rather than cutting competitors down. There is a massive set of customers available and the better outcomes we help our clients achieve the bigger the industry can grow.
