My private information was caught up in the Australian National University’s data breach back in 2018, which exposed 19 years' worth of staff and student records. I had graduated in 2005, but my old records were still retained (they should have only been kept for 7 years). A foreign state actor wouldn't now have all that data if the ANU's retention management obligations had been followed.   Cyber security has become a top priority for universities – and rightfully so. Unis are under a cyber bombardment, and preventing every breach is almost impossible.
