Chicago State University (CSU) applauds the efforts of the Illinois Commission on Equitable Public University Funding and Illinois Board of Higher Education 👏🏾 The report issued by the Commission represents an important review of the principles of equity-based funding in the State of Illinois. CSU is Illinois’ only 4-year, U.S. Department of Education-designated Predominantly Black Institution. In reference to the report, CSU President Z Scott, JD stated, “Against the backdrop of a 37% drop in enrollment of Black students in Illinois' higher education system since 2013, one thing is clear, we must center our approach to higher education funding with an understanding of the needs of all students and the operations of each university. An equitable approach to funding will position CSU to better serve the needs of our students. We look forward to continued engagement on this urgent issue.” The recommendations signal a game changer in funding for higher education addressing critical areas of access and student success. Intriguing questions in this article about ways to shorten the amount of time it takes to complete a degree, while still maintaining the integrity of academic programs. Time and money are real barriers to education for many students, and this is a prime area for higher ed to rethink some of its traditions and assumptions. (Also, great to see Chancellor Lori J. I recently had the incredible privilege of being invited by the U.S. Department of Education and the Biden-Harris Administration to speak at the National Summit on Equal Opportunity in Higher Education in Washington, DC. It was great to share my voice and insight on the national level to advocate for university admissions reforms that will benefit all Americans, realize the dreams of the underrepresented, and embolden them to become the leaders of the next generation. Below is an excerpt from my remarks: “In the wake of the Supreme Court’s ruling in SFFA v. Harvard, we at this Summit have an unparalleled opportunity to reform college admissions for the better. Our work here has the potential to turn the wildest dreams of underrepresented and marginalized students across this country into a tangible reality. But achieving this requires us to be proactive. I call on my University to use its vast wealth and resources in order to actively recruit leaders and changemakers from underrepresented communities, whose work often goes unnoticed due to a lack of support. I call on the Department of Education to incentivize universities, both public and private, to do the same. Excellence exists in every neighborhood, in every community, in every corner of this nation. It does not always manifest itself in the form of an endless list of extracurriculars or a perfect test score. It often appears in the form of an ironclad work ethic and a brazen determination to succeed, regardless of the obstacles in one’s path. In order to have an excellent university population and then an excellent workforce, college admissions must begin to recognize excellence in all its forms. This is the first step to developing an equitable landscape in higher education for generations to come.”

Student: “Why are you here professor?” Me: “So I can develop the #nextgeneration of #leaders” Working in public #highered is not for everyone. My #teaching load can be high during some semesters. There’s a wide range of #skill in my classrooms. The hours of #prep needed to create a quality #learning experience are long. And yes, I could earn a LOT more in #corporate #America. So why do it? 1) because we need passionate #educators! 2) because we cannot bridge the theory-practice divide if IRL #practitioners aren’t willing to become #scholar practitioners 3) because when my #underrepresented #students see an #asian #femaleleader can own the #classroom and be an #entrepreneur they begin to ask “why not me?” 4) because there’s no reward greater than being hugged by your former #students and asked if you can meet them for a Starbucks 💙 And yes, I am dang proud that The University of Texas at Arlington is the top public #university in #dfw 😎 #education still remains one of the most important keys to achieving #social and #economic mobility.
